I'm basically trying to find out which one would take better pics:

    higher-end camera from 2000
    Nikon Coolpix 990 3MP

    or

    lower-end camera from 2006
    Canon A410

I realize that neither one of these are "serious" digital cameras or even "hobbiest" level cameras but I'm just a dad wanting to take some summertime pics of the kids for about $150. I'm just wondering how much of the old "high-end" technology is considered "basic" technology in today's standards.

Here's a couple of samples from the Coolpix 990 (work camera)

I don't know details about either camera, but 6 years is an eternity in the world of digicams.

I mean, digicams were in their infancy in 2000.

a low end current model > high end model from years ago

I was going through some old pics from my Sony Mavica CD1000. That thing was the shit years ago but when compared to the newer cameras of today, the quality doesn't come anywhere near what $200 P&S cameras are doing.
