Who else here prefers the quieter, more deadpan humour of Bill Murray now compared to his earlier Caddyshack & Stripes roles?

He was never really all that funny. He just landed roles that focused on his "idiot" character.

But then was better than now.

Bill Murray is now taking acting seriously.

Caddyshack was amazing, but so was Rushmore. He has tapped into different strengts like playing a somber and aloof character in Lost in Translation, but its no better or worse.

As funny as his early movies were I think the newer ones are better because it is a smarter funny. Rushmore is fuckin hilarious and Life Aquatic looks really good I guess 100 Cigarettes isn't really like acting but anything with him and Wu Tang is classic.

I think he's been consistant. I can't think of anything he's been "bad" in. The guy has a lot of great qualities that make him enjoyable on screen.

Caddyshack was amazing because of Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight, not because of Bill Murray.

Lost in Translation...I hated it. It was the most horribly boring movie I've ever seen.

But I have to say that Groundhog Day was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and Murray was great in it. IMO, that was his best performance.

Better now. I enjoy subtle humor more than thoughtless jokes.

LIT wasn't my favorite, but I love Royal Tennenbaums, Caddyshack, and I'm stoked about Life Aquatic. His lines in the trailer make me LOL..

  16. Bill Murray wasn't even supposed to have many lines in Caddyshack. Practically everything he says in that movie is improvised which I think makes his performance 100 times better. The movies he is in now are better, but I think him as an actor is great no matter when it was.

There's a great retrospective of him on VH1's movie section. It's new, and has all these clips and photos and stuff, plus a special on Bill Murray and his past and his many facets of humor. You'd enjoy it if you like Bill, check it out...http://www.vh1.com/movies/movie/242537/interviewsfeatures.jhtml
