I just had a Inspirion 4000 given to me. But some how it only has 9.21gb on the hd. Any one know where i can get a new internal hd or know of one that will work? Not really sure if newer ones like for a 6000 or something will work? Or should i just go for an external?

Hard drives are hard drives. Just make sure the plug is the same. IDE and ATA are the same thing; Serial ATA is different; so is SCSI. You probably have an IDE/ATA drive. You can get those at Best Buy or Circuit City or...hell, even Walmart sells them now.

Looks like that's a laptop, not a desktop, so IDE, ATA, SATA, and SCSI are all out for you, you'll need to get a laptop harddrive. Luckily, thosea are all standard, too. Unluckily, they tend to be a little more expensive than a desktop hd. You could go with an external USB hd enclosure, but that would be a bit of a hassle for a laptop. Just look around for laptop hd's, mobile 2.5" drives, probably something good there at www.tigerdirect.com . Here's one they have:
