So, I tried to search, and I really don't understand the process well enough to know. I am traveling to Syria for the summer and I understand there are several sites that are blocked from there. I ran across this company, StrongVPN, that appears to offer what I am looking for, is this correct??? I just want to be able to access OT, facebook, etc, without any hassles.

I wouldn't tempt the Gods of Syria with any illegal proxy activity while I was there.
It's your call, but it could end badly.

Yeah, they kinda take that shit seriously over there. Not that you're very likely to get caught, but they know that, and the punishment is ramped-up to compensate.

fMods, I don't know if this is considered bypassing in the rules, so feel free to edit or delete.

SSH tunneling is your friend :bigthumb:

Ok, here's what you do. Set up a *nix server at yours or someone's house. Have them set up dynamic-dns so you can access the server even when the IP changes (assuming you're on a dynamic segment).

Run sshd on port 80, and squid on port 3129.

When in Syria, use this command in a *nix terminal: ssh -C -L 3129:server.com:3129 [email protected] -p80 -N

In your browser, go to connection settings and set for proxy "127.0.0.1:3129"

Surf OT and profit. When someone sniffs your traffic, all they will see is a bunch of encrypted "http" packets to your server.

The question remains whether >128-bit encryption is still considered a restricted export, and whether Syria is considered an untrusted destination for that technology.

The only punishment I'm aware of has been aimed at bloggers making negative blogs about repressive govt. which I have no plans on doing. I just want to be able to stay connected through facebook, etc.

I'd suggest not doing any of that shit... to be honest with ya.

Syria's intelligence although might seem feeble to us here. But those mother fuckers know how to roll.

Put it this way, i've read up alot about syria to know.. CIA outsources all the crazy mother fuckers they want to interrogate to syria.

So good luck, be safe and guy some schwarma!
