So I'm working nights now and my life is a mess. I work 10-12 hours shifts and have an hour and a half commute each way. It's a long day. Anyways, I really have no problem staying awake during my shift. I get tired, but thats normal and to be expected. The problem I have is falling asleep on the drive home. Every single morning I fall asleep at least 10-15x finding myself drifted into another lane or woken up by the rumble strip. This scares the shit out of me. About a year ago I fell asleep on the highway and ran my car into a jersey barrier at 70mph. I was lucky to be alive after that, so i'm not willing to risk that again. Caffeine doesnt do anything (I fall asleep while sipping a tripple espresso), ephedrine hasnt really helped (a single bronkaid before leaving work and I'm still nodding at the wheel, and 1,3-dimethylamyamine (active from AMP) didnt do a single thing. What else is there? Am I really just fucked? If I can't figure this out I'm going to the doctors and I'm going to beg for some sort of amphetamine because this is honestly a huge safety issue for me.

all windows down helps me get through those times I'm exhausted. Or as DaFreak said, take a nap before driving back.

Stims will possibly only make you more tired.

Fuck. I remember taking that stuff a few years ago for some problems I was having. I didn't sleep for a day after taking one dose.

But OP, find a new place to live. You are going to eventually kill yourself on your commute or someone else if what you say is true.

I tried this the other night. I pulled into the rest stop and I could not sleep at all. I felt fully awake. Hopped back on the highway and started nodding off maybe 2 miles later. My body hates me:wtc:

Get a big cup of ice and chew it while you are driving home. Also drive with the windows down or AC on. I find it easier to keep awake when there is cold air circulating. I work an overnight shift also so I know the feeling.

About how many hours of sleep do you get per night? And when you sleep, do you toss and turn? Or have you ever awaken up in the middle of the night? Do you snore?

Honestly, most of your suggestions are not safe.
Get the prescription, that's for sure. Try to get a nap.

You do not want to be driving if you are falling asleep, no amount of "window down", "chew on ice", or "listen to music" is going to help and you're just going to put yourself, and others on the road, at risk.

Son, this is like asking how to turbocharge a car with no gas. You gonna run out of steam without sleep.

The best a stim can do is give you a false "pop" before you crash even harder.

i've found the most helpful thing is to eat. i usually have baby carrots. get the 5lb bags at costco for like 3.50 i think. that should last you about a week. i do almonds too. this hasn't failed me yet, and i'm one of those sleepy drivers too after 15 minutes of free/highway.

make sure not to be too comfortable either. don't turn on the heat - blast the ac instead. don't listen to an mp3 player/cd since this is sort of repetitive even if it's different songs. put it on fm or am, with random commercials. talk shows, like sports, are best.

Usually something like leave work 6:30am, get home at 8am, sleep till 11am (body just will not sleep any longer than this),wonder around the house aimlessly like a zombie till 3pm, try to sleep till 5pm (doesnt work, just toss and turn), leave for work at 6:30pm, get to work at 8, work, repeat...

I've got a blacked out curtain over the windows in my bedroom and I keep the fan on, but it doesnt help me get any more than 3-4 hours of sleep.

    Actually done this:hs:

Which is completely fine, even preferable, as long as it lasts until I get home.
