Alright, i don;t know how many of you know of my situation, i'm a freshman in college, i don;t have much money, and there is a whole lot more that i want to buy than i can afford. I've been looking at rifles and i've basically narrowed it down to savage 110/remington 700 or an AR build. My problem is that i can only get one or the other.

Background/use: I've been shooting a long time, so it's not like i'm learning for the first time. However, this will be my first rifle that i can call my own (not my family's). It will be a target rifle, i have no reason to hunt. The longest range i've ever been to is 100 yds, although i'm looking for something longer, no guaruntees though.

    Bolt Action Pros:
    -Excellent reliability
    -Great first rifle
    -extremely accurate
    -longevity
-will most likely be available to buy at any time

    Bolt Action Cons:
-More expensive ammo (.308 most likely)
-not quite as much fun as a semi-auto
    -I'm not building anything

    AR Pros:
-I get to build it and learn the ins and outs of the rifle
    -Plinkability
    -very customizable
-cheap to shoot due to surplus ammo
    -easy to fix

    AR Cons:
    -Not as accurate
-Due to politics and upcoming elections (this nov and next nov) they may not be allowed much longer (new AW ban?)
-Not as good of a first rifle

Part of me says go bolt action since it's a classic choice, it's great to learn on and teach myself stuff. However, another part of me says that I should build an AR because it's cheaper to shoot and they may not be around much longer if SHTF in congress in the next couple years and i would be dissapointed if i didn't get one while I had the opportunity to do so. Because of college, i probably will not get the opportunity to get another rifle untill i'm done with school in 4 years (with the exception of C&R or 10/22). I'm just lost :hsd:

Building an ar is about as exciting as building a sandwich or putting gas in your car. At 100 yards I don't think you need to worry about accuracy from either. I also don't think you need to worry about another assault weapons ban for a while, at least until the next presidental election and even then its just not a popular stance. It'll take something very nasty for gun control to become popular again for a while. The AR is customizable but as a broke college student you'll be lucky to afford ammo. I'd just buy which ever you have the most fun shooting.

of course you can build on a 700 action, but it will cost more.

Are you living on campus? I know at Tech all freshman had to live on campus and there was no way they were letting us keep firearms in our dorms. And I voted for AR, I bought one recently and it's fun to shoot and I like it alot.

Thats what i meant, although i may have misworded it, thats what i meant

I wont be spending alot of money on guns for at least 3.5 more years, alot can happen in 3.5 years, which is why i'm kind of at a standstill :hsd:

I can keep a rifle on campus, all i have to do is turn it in to security in a case and they will lock it up in the campus safe, we're a small school, they will store rifles for us assuming it will be used for hunting purposes

Go for the AR. If they try to put back in the AWB with the same wording, you can stick a target crowned bull barrel on there, be in compliance, and still have your AR.

Of the two you mentioned, AR.

There's no way they could word an AWB to include hunting style guns without REALLY pissing off the hunting element, which comprises a lot bigger voter segment than us enthusiasts/collectors/CCWers. So that leaves you a lot of time for a nice bolt gun, and perhaps very little for an AR, or military style weapon. I'd say FAL, though.

I'd go with the AR. If you're just looking for something basic it'll be a lot better than the ammo of the bolt action a long with getting a nice scope for it.

If you really want the 700 over the AR but are worried about a ban I bet you could scrounge $100 for an ar15 receiver in a couple years if you thought it was more likely then.

You are a freshman in college.

You left out the poll option for Beer, which is what I would vote for.

    .

Build an AK. Then put a 5 round magazine in it and tell them its for hunting purposes when you turn it in to storage

Ok, as of right now i have no interest in an AK, i target shoot, i don't hunt, if it were for a hunting rifle then sure i would consider the AK, but since there is a possibility that i could be extending my shooting distance once i find a new range, an AK will not provide me with the accuracy to be able to consistantly place my shots.

Secondly, i would be turning the rifle into security in a case, i sure wouldn't be walking across campus with any rifle out in the open, reguardless of type
