I have been looking into buying a handgun for a couple of months now and I have found a couple that I think I will like. I was hoping that the higher knowledge others in here could assist me with my decision. I have looked at the Walther P99, the Taurus 24/7, the Ruger P94, and my favorite so far over all, the Springfield Armory XD-40. ALL .40 S&W.

Im taking into consideration, price, reviews, both overall features and importantly safety features, along with comfort, accessories available, and manufacture warranties.

Being 6'9" I have larger hands. That reason being said, sub-compact is out of the picture. I am mostly interested in 4in barrels, because of compactness. I know most about the Springfield, because like I said before, that’s the one I have leaned toward mostly.

I would much appreciate any input had by others in regards to my dilemma.

I would like to get a gun of my own to practice with, and protection. Thats why im hesitant to just go and buy a cheaper gun from anywhere. I want to know that i have a gun that i dont have to worry about not working when i need it to.

Most modern firearms are going to be reliable. For Defense and target shooting you might also consider a 9mm the ammo is about $4 bucks cheaper a box for 100 and they are a little less expensive. XD-9 is $399 and I paid $430 for my XD-40. In the end its going to come down to preference. I would suggest if you havent already to rent some and buy what you like. People all over here may suggest GLock or Walther, but if you dont like the way it feels in your hand there isnt use in throwing money into a gun you dont enjoy shooting.
I have big hands too and the XD-40 I have not regrets

I am a big guy and carry both an XD9 Subbie and an XD40 4" Service. It's extremely reliable, accurate and comfortable for me. There are tons of accessories available as well.
All the guns you listed are good guns, so it's going to come down to which one feels the most comfortable to you.

    My favorite place is www.pistol-gear.com
owner is an XD smith and uses his for IDPA shooting. They also have incredible service. I usually get anything I order from them in 2 days.

is there a price range we're limited to or a desire to carry this weapon concealed?

i highly recommend you at least try out a Sig Sauer and Glock if you havent already.

I love my XD and i chose that over the glock because of the way it mated with my hand.

Only thing i dont like about it is that it has no de-cocking lever

When im at the range i dont mind walking aroudn with one in the tube. But the fact that there is no saftey selector switch or decocking lever on teh XD makes it seem slightly unsafe to me

Would you feel the same way about a revolver???

Would you feel the same way about a Glock???

If so, why would you feel the same way about a DAO automatic???

Very well said:bigthumb: All of the guns that you would be looking at are all good choices but you should get that one that you feel the most confident with and that you shoot well with.

Do your self a favor and go to a range that will let you rent a variety of different pistols for you to see which you feel the most comfortable with:cool:

Im fully aware of the safetys it does have. Im just saying that i would rather not have one in the tube and have the weapon cocked with out some sort of a saftey switch
