I asked a little while ago about building a new PC. You all provided a lot of help and I really appreciate it. However, the more I think about it, the more I think Id rather just have a nice laptop. It would take up less space, Id have more room on my desk at home, and I could take it with me when I went places.

All that being said, is there really any reason to get something like a Macbook Pro? Or can I get just as good of a laptop somewhere else without having to pay out of my butt for Apple?

Is the Apple OS really all that great? All I would do is probably edit pictures, maybe some video later, and play some games. Should I just get a windows 7 machine?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just get nice i7 or i5 laptop with Win7, 6GB memory, SSD and nvidia graphics.

I really dig Sony Vaio F series, all genuine Japanese commponenets, qulity machines. Just make sure to get extended warranty whatever you buy.

Get a Macbook Pro, it's just more stable, the internals are higher quality, you get things like the space-bar preview, you read RAW files in thumbnails just as fast as jpg, it's way easier for organization, management, etc.

Lenovo is also great for quality, at a fraction of the cost, but for spacebar preview and whatnot I guess the mac has em beat :dunno:

    You could always load hackintosh

windows 7 is a great OS. I use Mac OSx and Windows 7 every day, and they are really comparable.

The Mac OS isn't worth the cost anymore. You're simply paying for the name these days.

You can spec out a Lenovo machine that > the Macbook Pro for $7-$800 cheaper.

But the macbook pro sure is perty....

I've used a Toshiba for the past few years and love it. It's starting to die, so I just got a new i5 Gateway. It's fast, and runs Photoshop with no problems, but I do miss some things about the Toshiba (mostly the trackpad feel and the keyboard). Still i can honestly suggest either one.

My favorite part about my macbook pro is that whenever something broke, I could bring it to the Apple store and they would have it fixed either same day or within a week and I never had to deal with shipping anything.

Macbook Pro all the way. The hardware is probably the same as a comparable PC, but OSX is by and far the superior OS in terms of stability and creature comforts. Plus, if you want to edit video, you don't have to buy any additional software (iMovie does basic editing)

So if I want a windows laptop I should go with Lenovo? Is Toshiba ok? I really like the one I bought my wife a few years ago. It has held up really well.

    What is space bar preview?

    Thanks for all the help.

mbp is worth the cost imo. I love osx, especially in a design environment. wonderful piece of hardware, much better resale value as well

    But why?

I dont care about resale. Im running the thing into the ground. Plus, if it costs more, it SHOULD have more resale value. If I could get the same spec laptop for X dollars less just because its a Windows machine, I should hope that the Mac laptop resells for X dollars more.

I still dont see any reason why aside from, "I just like it". Currently, I just like Windows. I get along great with it. Unless OSX is objectively better (which it looks like it isnt), I dont see any reason to go that route.

after learning to use automator/apple scripting (not in any advanced way) i use it enough, that it would irritate me not to have it.

Though, if the new mac pro doesn't come out soon, i may learn to live without it.

    Also..

Would an i7 720QM be better than an i5 430M even though the i5 has a higher base speed? Im assuming the answer is yes...

What is all this turbo boost stuff?

    13" Macbook Pro

Its hard to explain why, you just need to use it for a little while and you'll be hooked.

The build quality and customer support is > *

pretty sure the i7 has more onboard cashe (which helps a ton with speed) and hyperthreading (which would be turbo boost) not entirely sure what it does, i know my i7 imac screams though.
