Total runs me just over a grand.

Total memory will be 8GB so I will need to run Vista.

That would add like $300-$400 more :dunno:

For just gaming I doubt he'll notice the difference.

I don't want an i7 just yet. Don't need the extra horsepower and I don't wanna spend extra $$ on the proc and compliant mobo.

Actually all windows 32bit versions can only use ~3GB, Windows XP x64 can use 128GB, Windows 2003 x64, Vista x64 and Windows 2007 x64 all support 2TB of memory. So don't have to run Windows Vista any 64bit windows will do.

    CPU:Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz
    Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366
    Mem:G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
    GFX:MSI N260GTX-T2D896 OC GeForce GTX 260 896MB
    HD:SAMSUNG HD642JJ 640GB
    Case: SILVERSTONE Kublai Series
    PSU: OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W
DVDb: ASUS 20X DVD±R DVD Burner

    also just over 1 grand
    totals for: 1064,92 after rebates

You will gain Quad core (i7) and DDR3, and the option to upgrade to SLI. You will lose 2GB of mem a different (cheaper case) don't get me wrong the P182 is a great (looking) case but so overrated imo, as for the PSU also a major brand I know everyone OT sack rides Corsair PSU's but other brands like Thermaltake, OCZ, Coolermaster etc are also extremly good/reliable no reason to pick corsair over them.

No, 32bit OS's can only use ~4gb of memory. Windows XP x64 can see more than 4.

Initially I was wondering why he thought that only vista can support more memory, but now that you mention it...

32bit OS's can use 4GB of memory minus the memory used for memory mapped i/o, which ends up being around ~3GB.

    and 8GB is overkill, definitely.

For an extra 30 bucks there is no reason not to upgrade to 8GB.

Thanks for explaining the memory difference stuff too, I am not a Windows guy by trade and had no idea that there was even a 64bit version of XP.

I think I am going to keep with the C2D. i7 still hasn't wowed me.

you wouldn't want to use the 64bit version of XP, it's shitty compared to vista 64bit.

If I were going to spend a lot of time editing code, I'd spend less money on horsepower and more money on screen real estate.

    .

Also, I'd drop the RAM down to DDR2 and get more and maybe a bigger hdd

A larger one. Does it have to be a laptop?

If you want to spend more money get a 300gb velociraptor drive.

That will be a fast gaming machine, but personally i'd go bite the bullet and get the i7. They are runing rings around anything else right now, are only a little more than a 9550, and your hardware will be future proofed for a good few years. Forget dual core now.

But why? I honestly have zero uses for a quad core machine. I mean, unless I decide to play Crysis and Photoshop while simultaneously editing HD video.
