I was talking to a new Marine who just graduated SOI and is currently at 1st Recon BN in RTP, he obviously passed the indoc. Well anyways he was asking me about what my plans are, what my MOS is, etc. and I told him the whole "Infantry with MCSF option" that you guys have heard from me oh so much, and he told me that i'm wasting my time and should go straight infantry and take the indoc, he says that I can pass the indoc NO PROBLEM AT ALL. I told him that my PFT score is only around 240 and i've heard only the guys who are 300 PFT'ers can pass it, and he told me that my PFT will definitely go up in boot and I will have no problem passing the indoc if I prepare myself to the swimming aspects of the indoc before I ship. He told me the indoc consisted of the following and in all of the events you're wearing cammies:

-25 meter underwater swim without breaking the surface and without pushing off a wall
-demonstrate the proper abandon ship technique off the high dive platform (he said they teach you it in boot, so no problem)
-retreival of a rubber rifle from the bottom of the deep end of the pool, hold above water for 3 seconds
-30 minute treading water using both your arms and legs
-demonstrate proper trouser inflation technique (he saod they also teach this one to you in boot)
-500m timed swim using either the breast or side stroke... he told me the time limit was LONG and not to worry.
-run a full PFT... situps, pullups, 3 mile run... anyone who passes all of the above events and then is able to still get a first class PFT score is interviewed by some brass guy and then finishes the rest of SOI with the 0311 course and then goes to RTP after SOI graduation.

He also said you get 2 tries for everything if you fuck it up the first time. I honestly believe I can do all of this. I was always a strong swimmer (even when I was fat :o ). While my PFT score is only around 235 or 240, my run time is very close to 18 minutes and i'm at 115 situps, it's just i'm still stuck at around 10 pullups by by the time I ship and then actually graduate I expect to be at or close to 20.

I was always under the impression the recon indoc was like a 15 mile run on a beach, up mountains and hills, then a 3,000m swim through the ocean and all sorts of crap lol... then I find out what it's really like from someone who passed it, and I know I can pass those events he told me.

I only have about a month and a half until I ship and I have to make a decision fast if I want to stay with my MCSF option or go straight infantry and take the indoc at SOI, I can't tell my recruiter 1 week before I ship to change my contract to something else, so I need to decide in the next week or two at most.

I'm not sure if I should switch my contract or not and would really appreciate some serious input and advice, no trolling or joking around or anything in this thread please.

cross your legs, and cross your arms over your chest, jump from a 5m or so platform (that's what we did in navy boot). probably pretty similar to marine (about the only thing that is)

    This step:
-500m timed swim using either the breast or side stroke... he told me the time limit was LONG and not to worry.

That shit is hard in BDU's. Had to do in a couple times in army and that shit wore me out.

P.S. Strong swimmer in real life = average swimmer in BDU's.

that hole was created by a bomb the size of a fucking backpack...

if a present day torpedo hits a ship, its going down within 5 minutes...

look up the videos of torpedo tests, blew a DD clean in half and went right under...

it would depend on the assault, but cruisers and smaller ships are still capable of sinking,

that and plus the military loves loves loves training for the inevitable

you wanna talk about inevitable, we have to do auto-rotate drills, cause if your engine stops you should still be able to control your helicopter. its a great feeling when you go up to 50 feet, and kill your engines. you hit the ground hard, so if i was any higher than that, i don't really know what i would do with myself.

Well I just got back from the YMCA, tried to replicate the swimming portion of the indoc... apparently swimming is now MORE difficult since I lost all my weight, it's so hard to stay afloat now  :hs:

Well I was pretty good in all the events except the 25m underwater swim, I got like 10m before I came up gasping for air, but I guess that's something that can be worked on.

A lot of the sinkexs you see are assisted shot, not all that realistic.

But yeah, if you were on something small and got hit by something like a MK48 equivilant you'd most likely be in deep deep shit.

Thankfully you don't have to wear boots at all during the indoc according to him, just cammies.
