We are writing from the Amazon Associates Program to notify you that your Associates account has been closed as of June 29, 2009. This is a direct result of the unconstitutional tax collection scheme passed by the Rhode Island General Assembly with a veto-proof majority. As a result, we will no longer pay any referral fees for customers referred to Amazon.com or Endless.com after June 29. We were forced to take this unfortunate action in anticipation of actual enactment because of uncertainties surrounding the legislation’s effective date. The governor could sign the bill -- or have his veto overridden -- any day now.
Please be assured that all qualifying referral fees earned prior to June 29, 2009 will be processed and paid in full in accordance with our regular referral fee schedule. Based on your account closure date of June 29, 2009, any final payments will be paid by September 1, 2009.
In the event that Rhode Island repeals this tax collection scheme, we would certainly be happy to re-open our Associates program to Rhode Island residents.
The Rhode Island General Assembly’s website is http://www.rilin.state.ri.us/, the governor's website is http://www.governor.ri.gov/, and additional information may be obtained from the Performance Marketing Alliance at http://www.performancemarketingalliance.com/.
We have enjoyed working with you and other Rhode Island-based participants in the Amazon Associates Program, and wish you all the best in your future.

    Best Regards,
    The Amazon Associates Team

it's fucking infuriating how much money this state costs me. I'm on the edge of making enough money with amazon to actually make me move though :(

State passes Affiliate Tax laws that fucks these companies, so the affiliate company (in this case, Amazon) drops all affiliates in said state. This is happened in N.C. and R.I. in the last few weeks.

    Gay.

I recommend states that love low taxes. FL and NH ring a bell. No state income tax, and no sales tax either. Only thing that is a bit high is Property Tax but still doesnt compare to states such as Taxachusetts. Another reason half of Massachusetts lives in NH.

It is pretty easy actually. Just need to find a legit person. If you need a lawyer for the business set up. I got a person, Autox, whom works as a lawyer (actually 2, but one is a Contract Lawyer) at one of the most important Internet Companies in the world (think,... internet fails to work without this company). She works in Boston, but does all personal stuff in NH.

Could I set up a PO box in Florida or Nevada and form an LLC there while still living in NC? :o

Damn,. I was seriously thinking about getting into affiliate marketing, but I'm moving back to NC in a month.

Would ebay still be good to run with?

You can still do classic affiliate marketing, just not with Amazon.

Wait, am I right? Because I'll be forced to move elsewhere if I can't do affiliate marketing anymore.

An old partner of mine gets all his shit handled by mailboxes etc I think from an old address in VA, he's in NV now. Shouldn't be hard to incorporate elsewhere and let someone like them handle your shit.

It seems like it's mostly for sales of items, so certain shit might start crumbling for NC affiliates.

    http://www.news-record.com/content/2009/06/17/article/amazon_warns_nc_affiliates_about_tax_issue

New York pulled this shit first and Amazon lost their appeal or whatever, but apparently Amazon is still fighting there, so I imagine they'll do it in the other states as well. They've also worked with a bunch of states to try to hold them off from doing anything it seems. States are poor and trying to figure out how to get money anyway that they can, so the courts are siding with them, since that's where they get their money.

Saw a discussion about this on DigitalPoint.

A while ago, there was the NY legislation on online businesses. Now, it's NC.
