"Translating BMW’s Formula 1 experience directly into a road car, the new BMW M5 is powered by a normally aspirated five-litre V10 engine – a first for BMW – with the two five-cylinder banks arranged at a 90-degree angle. Redlined at 8,250rpm, the 507bhp and 520Nm of torque propels the car from zero to 62mph in 4.7seconds and to 124mph in 15 seconds before reaching an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Without the limiter, the new M5 would be capable of an awe-inspiring 205mph. These levels of performance, when combined with the lightweight aluminium chassis and body panels from the 5 Series, ensure the new M5 can lap the infamous ‘Nordschleife’ at the Nürburgring in approximately eight minutes – a time rarely achieved even by high performance sports cars."

It's a technical masterpiece, to me there is no other way of describing it. Reading about the 7speed sequential gearbox, the headup display and the MDrive functions highlights just how incredibly advanced the new M5 is. But somehow it just seems too clinical compared to the E39. The level of electronic assistance and intervention is staggering, and whilst it is awesome that it'll lap the Nordschliefe in 8 minutes, it just seems lacking soul. Maybe its just as in the same way I prefer the Ferrari F40 to the McLaren F1, or because I consider the E39 to be perfection with character.

Looks wise, in my opinion making the front end look good was always going to be an impossible task. Those lights and grille spoil that car so much. The back however looks great, and that rear three-quarter view is definetly its most attractive angle. I love the detailing with the wing mirrors and M3 style vents on the wing.

I have no doubts this probably is the ultimate driving machine. Its just a little too ultimate for me :big grin:

It's nice from a technical perspective, but the interior really looks half-assed... nothing really matches, seems like poor quality and design for such an expensive, flagship model. I mean, that silver piece around the SMG just looks tacked on at the last second from some GM...

I mean, this is what you'd expect from an interior for that price... it's not really that hard to make something look coherent:

Agreed but it is obvious that BMW is not going abandon it anytime soon. That being said, that car as a whole package is a beast and one that can seat four in style. I am loving this car. Can't wait to drive it.

:werd: But I think curiousgeorge is right - if you are considering a new BMW in the foreseeable future you're going to have to get used to iDrive. :o

:wackit: I just wish they got rid of the middle "stick". And put on the 6 series headlights. That is all.

Well, you'll sort of get your wish as the forthcoming M6 is going to have the same engine as this M5. Talk about

    More pics :bigthumb:

I have to agree with previous comments about the silver plate surronding the SMG controls. It does look like it was just glued there last minute. At the very least it should match the trim of teh rest of the car.

I agree, I miss the elegant interior of the previous model most.

The new V10 is quite the engineering jewel though.

Boy, Cadillac just fell way behind again. Took 'em how many years to beat the previous M5? They've got a long way to go now...and Audi just redesigned the A6, so a new RS6 is on the way...

Things aren't looking good for Germany's competitors. But the new M5 is still ugly. :fawkd:

OMG, I can't believe you guys. The new 5 is hideous, just like the new 6 or the new 7. It's a damn shame !

The pre Bangle bimmers were the nicest cars on the road, the new models look like a joke. Mercedes tries to outdo BMW with the new CLS, which looks even more crappy (hard to believe that's possible).

Guess I have to shelve my plans for a new bimmer and look at Audi again, before they come up with new fucked up design.

The exterior looks way too busy. Love that V-10 though

sweet car, too bad it looks like every other 4 door POS bimmer sedan.

205 mph, what a load of shit. just look at that car - you need far better aero dynamics to get into the 200 mph range with 500 hp. 180-185 i'll believe.
