I was thinking about putting up some ads on craigslist saying I will take photos of 1-2 people for like a half hour or an hour in a non event type setting in order to get better.

Do you think this would be a reasonable thing to do? Any advice on what to put in one of these ads?

I'm not looking to make any money, just learn and get some posed shots under my belt.

Yea I'm considering the same thing. Are you on Model Mayhem? Also an ok place to get portfolio going, just have to deal with the sometimes flaky models.

I haven't signed up for Model Mayhem. I haven't really looked into the site actually.

    this is an excellent idea.

makes me laugh when people wonder about shooting a wedding cold...yet find it too much of a bother to put together a free portrait shoot to check themselves.

you're doing things the right way...def

Make it clear in any ad that you're doing it for a finite period of time only. Otherwise, you'll still be working for free in 6 months.

I have a friend that did that and he had 3 or 4 hits that he followed up on for TFCD (Time for CD) and all he did was process and hand over a CD to the model, no money exchanged. They're out there :dunno: if you're not looking to make any money and don't mind giving away your product go for it

in exchange for your free pics you can also make them sign a waiver giving you permission to use the pics you took of them to promote your website or in your portfolio.

Yes, by not charging for the pics you still aren't entitled to use them for promotions without consent if someone were to get picky about it.

I thought about this not too long ago, but felt like it would come off real weird and not get any responses back.

it's very popular and not weird at all. If you were stating that you would only do noods or need a nood photo first, then it would be weird.

    actually its very common.

lots of guys get a start by doing tfcd out on MM or craigslist.

    Oh and...model release....ALWAYS.

Money/other payment is irrelevant to the question of usage rights.
If you expect to show it in public...model release protects your ass.

Well, I've had the posting up for a few days now and all I've got back is spam. Might have to try the MM route if this continues :o
