I have a collection of comics that I bought from 1991 - 1993. It is a few hundered. I have one of those longer boxes you buy in a shop and two smaller ones I keep them in. All of my books I backed and bagged back in the day when they were new. I have been buying some books here and there in the last 3 months, but before then my hobby of comics was mostly shifting the boxes from apartment to apartment over the years. Earlier this year my fiance and I moved into her Dads house (before you start bashing me know that her Mother passed away in July) and we used her Dad's basement to store things - including said boxes of comics. Well yesterday my area got this awful rainstorm. Some areas got as much as an inch of rain an hour. When I got home from work her Father told me the basement had flooded. I pictured water to my hips. It wasn't that bad. Just water on the floor. When the three of us had gone downstairs to clean up the mess I made a heart stopping discovery. You guessed it. My large box of comics was sitting on the floor in a puddle. Some twit (your truly) had decided that storing it ON THE DAMNED FLOOR was a good idea. The bottom of the box was soaked. Her Father didn't know what was in the box, he jumped when an explative leaked past my lips. Get this crap. I opened up the box expecting the worst. The box had performed as designed. It had soaked up the water between the layers of paper in the box, inside the box wasn't really even damp. I was astounded. I took all the comics out to see if the bags were wet. They were not. Not a single bag was wet. Not even damp. Hell I DID THE WORST DAMAGE. I was sitting the comics on a table taking them out of the box when I accidently knocked them onto a floor and back into the damned puddle! Oh the irony. But they were still in the bags. Those comics, the outside of the bags were wet. But when I took the comics out they were not even damp. Perfectly dry. I pitched the bags and backs that got wet and put all those comics in a pile. I bought a new long box and new package of 100 bags and backs the other day. I can't believe that there was so little damage. I never know boxes were any good at keeping out water.
