MIL Obama Says Repeal of 'Don't Ask' Possible

Asked what he could reasonably accomplish for the gay community as president, Obama said he can "reasonably see" repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy as well as signing legislation to ban workplace discrimination against gays. He said he'd like transgendered people to be covered by the law, but thinks it would be tough to get such legislation through Congress.

"We're spending large sums of money to kick highly qualified gays or lesbians out of our military, some of whom possess specialties like Arab-language capabilities that we desperately need. That doesn't make us more safe."

hmmm, lets just make an all gay/lesbian intel unit so we can properly utilize the arabic speaking skills that they all have...........no offense but 90% of the gays/lesbians i have met in 5 years have not had very highly trained/important jobs

I'll always find it hilarious that there is an actual way of kicking out queers from the military in the US. :mamoru:

Sounds like the rest of the military. I doubt that gays have any significant differences (in regards of training, capability, skills...) that the rest of the military, on average.

I was in honor guard with a guy we all thought was gay. He made BTZ, was made the flight leader, etc. Shit hot guy. Really knew his stuff. Nuke troop, the whole nine yards. Just found out today that he got out not too long ago and posted on his MySpace that he's gay. I think we were all better off not knowing. There's also another guy on base with HIV that everyone assumes is gay. But once again, we're better off not knowing.

If someone does their job. I could honestly care less what they do in the privacy of their home.

exactly...i can only imagine the backlash within the ranks....the bashing/name calling someone gets pissed off by a homosexual. It's fine the way it is...they can serve, quietly.

I think it would be a bad idea to be honest, people will look at gays differently in a Military situation. I hate to say it and I may come off as old school or ignorant but even in the showers I would be nervous with a guy who was openly gay.

exactly, and it's not like you're going to get hit on every single day, or whoops I dropped the soap

most gay dudes aren't the gigantic flaming people you see on TV, every gay person I've met you honestly wouldn't have known they were gay other then the fact they like other dudes

I realize that they aren't going to be hitting on me or anything but I would still be uncomfortable because I know if I was naked in the shower with a girl I am going to be checking them out because I am attracted to them. I would assume the same of them to me and I'm not really too cool with that. I like not knowing if someone is gay, because then that thought never crosses my mind.

my ALS instructor brought up a good point about gays in the military, 60 or so years ago a lot of the same things were being said about blacks being in the military, and now no one looks at them any different

Not really much to explain. If you have a real problem with gay people there is really something wrong with you. Its 2008, we all know they exist, and trying to sweep them under the rug is pretty retarded.
