those ad&d nerds in high school? they're now all your battle buddies at nuke school. autistic shut-ins that you get to be around and stuck in a submarine for the rest of your career. yay!

in a highly stereotypical way, this is true. I went AV when I enlisted and became an AE and I can't complain, I feel the aviation navy lives a little better than the others. My .02 on nukes comes from boat experience with them: I've talking to maybe 3 cool ones, the rest don't stop as soon you start conversing with them and they're fucking bizarre. They're drilled constantly ("propulsion plant casualty...." remember that if you go nuke) and work weird long hours. :dunno: your call, that's just an outsider looking in and what I see.

I'm a nuke about to graduate power school, so I'm about a year in. I can answer some questions for you later, but I'm about to head to class now. And yes, some nukes are effing crazy. but not all.

    don't nuke it! :)

Also expect to receive outside critisim a lot. Nukes overall think they're better than the rest of the navy and a lot of people resent them for that mindset. Obviously you don't have to follow suite but expect an uphill battle with your non-nuke friends. Also remember that carriers have nukes on em not just subs so if you don't feel like that would be the life for you, can always go surface.

I know lots of former navy nukes because they nearly all end up working in nuclear power. The descriptions given by most of the haters in this thread are a bit off. Most of these guys are regular guys with a wife, a few kids, a house, and a GOOD paying job. I know ONE guy who's into stuff like online gaming MMOs and such.

I can GUARANTEE you that you have job security for life once you go to the civilian side. Navy nukes are in demand all over the place at nuclear power plants and the pay is great (I started as an operator at $60k/yr).

AV has its share of nasties, but typically they are the guys who flunked out of Nuke school

I went in and became an AT. Great rate and job. With proper networking you can go anywhere with that training. I am pulling down just as much as most nukes do coming out.

:werd: if you work around FLIR pods, learn as much as you can about those things. FLIR tech reps make great money.

I'm actually the AF counterpart for those guys that fixed your pods.

And now I'm going back into the Army.
