I accidentally deleted some files needed for booting on my other pc (WinXP). So what i did is I copied NTLDR and some other files from this pc to a disk, booted the other pc with a Win98 disk, but when I use the disk with NTLDR files, it's hidden and won't show up on the DOS prompt so I couldn't copy it.

    help please...

Boot up using your Windows XP CD and, after the installer loads all of its crap into memory and settles down, choose the option to "Repair Windows Using The Repair Console". After you choose this option, the screen will switch to something resembling a DOS prompt (because it is one, just with fewer functions). After you log into the installation of Windows on the computer that's broken, type in the command "FIXBOOT". Then exit (or if you prefer, you can run "CHKDSK" to make sure your disk is working properly before exiting). This should do the trick.

If it doesn't fix the problem, you can choose to "Install Windows" in the same place it was originally installed; when you do this, the installer will give you the option to "Repair Windows" or to wipe the hard drive clean and start over; you want to choose the option to repair. It will then reinstall all of the files needed to run Windows, but without killing your files, settings, or user accounts. When it's done, reboot and download all the updates that got wiped out by the repair process.

I just had this happen to me today. Put in windows cd, go to repair, log on to installation and get to dos prompt.

Now does your computer have a c:\i386 folder? If so type this into teh prompt

    copy c:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy c:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

If you dont, you will need to copy off of the windows cd.

    copy x:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy x:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

where x = drive letter of cd-rom drive. also check

I've used this before with no ill effects. Computer booted right up afterwards.

EDIT: (it's implied that I was seeing the same error message at the time.)

Odd, I had this problem yesterday as well. Conveniently right after installing Microsoft's piracy check windows update. Somehow all that was wrong was the boot order of my drives.

the fixboot command shouldn't mess anything up, unless you have multiple os's.

Lest we forget, the people who humped me for my suggestion are the people who are most likely to be running dual-boot systems.

Anyway, it would be nice if the thread starter could give us an update on this issue.
