I never really considered buying a shotgun until I saw how dirt fucking cheap some of them were, under $300 for a Benelli Nova and a Remington 870.

Of the 12 gauge Nova's and 870 "Express", which one is the better shotgun? More importantly, which one is more fun to shoot? Can they be used for entry level trap/skeet shooting?

Another question, i've done a few searches here in the WMD forum for shotty's and people kept talking about a choke.... what's a choke?

And how do I decide whether I should get a 26" or 28" barrel?

I still can't get over how cheap they are, hot damn.

I'm impartial to both and really am not sure which one to go with, but the 870 is winning just because it's American made by union men :o

Can someone explain what a "choke" is/does and also, what is a good way to decide whether to get a 26" or 28" barrel?

    Thanks

Choke tubes reduce the diameter of the bore at the muzzle therefore increasing the effective range of the shotgun.

Different types of ammo pattern differently in different shotguns with different barrels/chokes, so you should always pattern your shotgun.

a choke is a tube that is screwed into muzzle end of a shotgun barrel. it's used to tighten shot patterns(grouping of pellets). not all barrels are threaded to accept chokes. it's also common for a double barrel shotgun to have the muzzle opening of one of the barrels a bit narrower than the other thus performing as if a choke were installed.

either of the guns you mentioned would work as a beginning skeet/trap gun.

a longer barrel will be more accurate, but a shorter one will swing(lead the target) more quickly.

as for which one is more fun to shoot, it's all personal preference.

i would reccomend the 870 because they are plentiful, have proven themselves and aftermarket accessories abound.

I had a great post lined up last night, but my comp died. And its all be answered

Anyway. I had the chance to get a used Benelli Nova Pump. I didnt take it because while the feel was good, i couldnt see justifying the extra for a pump with the benelli name. Thier semi-autos are awsome, but the 870 will do just fine. Plus the feel of the wood stocks and length of the 870 was better when i handled it. So now i have the 870 express and I am very happy with my decision.

I think ease of disassembly on the Nova would make me buy it all over again.
