Macbook to the rescue. Seriously. He has no idea about computers and needs it for school. Macbook regular, start with the base model and upgrade RAM to 1 gig. Perfect for him.

I see three options. First is an Apple, the other two are PC's:

    Apple MacBook
    13" Widescreen
    Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz
    1.5GB DDR2 Memory
    60GB SATA Hard Drive
    DVD-R/CD-RW Drive
    WiFi/Bluetooth
    $1149

    Asus Z62F Core Duo Notebook
    14.1" Widescreen
    Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz
    1.5GB DDR2 Memory
    60GB SATA Hard Drive
    DVD-R/CD-RW Drive
    SD/MMC/SM/MS Memory Card Reader
    WiFi
    $1200

    Lenovo ThinkPad R60
    14.1" Screen
    Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz
    1.5GB DDR2 Memory
    60GB SATA Hard Drive
    DVD-RW Drive
    WiFi
    $1250

The Apple I quoted has the Education Discount already applied. The others do not. Some schools give discounts on Lenovos, so that may be cheaper.

These can be re-configured... I just gave these as a base-line.

Do *not* get a Dell, HP, Compaq, Acer, etc... Stick with these three brands I quoted.

    • WiFi is *usually* not free.
    • WiFi does not work everywhere.
    • WiFi is *not* like a cell phone.
    • You cannot get a cell-phone like subscription.
    • WiFi is useful up to 200 feet from an access point. That's it.
    • You must have an access point to connect to.
    • Starbucks has hotspots but they are NOT free
    • You cannot get access to a starbucks hotspot with coffee purchase
    • starbucks hotspots start at $10 per day, or a flat-rate for the month
    • Extra equipment may or may not be required.
    • Many laptops have built-in wifi cards, now
    • At home you need a wireless router *in addition* to your modem and ISP subscription to use wifi.

Some businesses allow free access. Red Robin near my home is one such business. As is the Portland Airport.

*however* gaining access to a starbucks hotspot (or any other provider that charges for their service) without paying is ILLEGAL.

Some of us take the idea of people using us for help seriously. And when people utilize us for the use of illegal means we get pissed off. If you want computer help we're here and do a pretty good job compared to many computer forums as far as getting quality responses in a timely fashion. However, don't take advantage of us. If you want or have desires to do something illegal take it to some l33t haxx0rs forum.

There are plenty of free hot spots in coffee shops and businesses around town, just about everywhere. Star Bucks charges... but a smaller coffee shop won't. My local bar has free wifi, for instance. The result is that its never hard, once you do a bit of looking, to find free wifi all around you. So start doing some looking, and you'll find the coverage you need.

You can think of WiFi as a set of walkie-talkies for your computer -- it saves you the trouble of plugging into the wall. WiFi is free to use by itself, but there has to be a wired internet connection on the other end for you to actually surf the web. That said, it's not very common to find a WiFi reciever that isn't hooked into the internet.

If you're not in range of a WiFi reciever, then you can't connect. If the person who owns the internet connection doesn't want you to use their internet, then you can't connect. If you don't know the password (places like Starbucks charge money to give you a username and password, other places don't) then you can't connect. If you know the password, and you're in range, and the person who owns the internet connection likes you, then you can connect.

Most new laptops have built-in WiFi radio transmitters nowadays, but if you buy an older model you may need to get an add-on transmitter. You can get just about anything you need at www.newegg.com.
