ok I've had about all I can handle with my dell 8500. I'm an architecture major and I do a lot of graphic work, this thing keeps dropping my usb mouse, video problems and now it's developing a tempermental boot issue.

so looking for a replacement notebook, what are ya'll opinions on what / who to look at.

    Wait.

From May-June the following will happen:

    - Windows Vista SP1 will be released.
    - Intel's new "Santa Rosa" architecture will debut.
    - nVidia's DX10 mobile chips will be released.

My brother's doing architecture these last 5 or 6 years and although he's always wanted to switch to OS X, he never did because 3dstudio max only runs on Windows.

So if you need 3d s max , you may need to buy a Windows license for a Macbook.

I dunno much about notebooks, but look around and I'm sure you'll find a good one. My sister's HP is fairly nice of a machine.

yea, um, hp would be a bad choice.

The only name-brand PC-based notebook I'd recommend is a Lenovo ThinkPad.
