Could the northbridge overheat in like 10 seconds so it freezes before its even out of the initial bios boot screen?

the heatsink / fan fell off of the northbridge chip and it feels like ever since that happened the computer wont boot up..

Do you think that getting some thermal paste and a new fan will allow the chip to keep cool enough?

I'm not sure if the chip is fried or not..

The computer hasn't been on in like 4 or 5 months, and as soon as I try to turn it on, it gets to detecting memory / drives in the BIOS and it just freezes...

Do you think this is what could be happening??

so the heatsink and fan fell off the CPU, and you're wondering if it will overheat quickly?

    The answer is yes

You've probably done some heat damage to other parts of the system also. i'd be checking the ram and video card. :ugh:

it's beyond repair.. now the screen doesn't even show the bios.. I dont feel like spending money over and over again on this machine to see whats broken or not, I'm just going to keep some of the parts as spares and Im going to buy a new computer :(

you pull everything except the motherboard, video card, CPU, and one stick of RAM, and see if it powers on
