Ok, I am a mom of 3 and weigh about 125 right now. I work out on a normal basis - but hadn't since the end of August and just getting back into it. The last time I was really working out and dieting I could not get my lower stomach to flatten at all, but I had gotten down to 115 for being 5'4". I know I wont ever have a totally flat stomach being a mom, but I almost feel like when working my abs I end up building them out. Doing any type of crunch I exhale as I contract the muscles, but sometimes I feel like I am pushing the muscles out, instead of pulling them in no matter how hard I try. Does that make any sense- if I wasnt focusing on pulling them in would they build out? Any other suggestions to getting that lower stomach flatter?

Diet will show you your abs, not crunches, is what he means. Ab work- which you don't even necessarily need if you're doing real lifting- will *build* your muscles, but you won't see them with fat over them.

Well I got to the point where I was eating the least amount I think I possibly could for a couple months straight and they didnt get any better at all. I still had a stomach "pod". I dont think I could eat less than I was back then :o

From my understanding it is not about how much you eat really, but what you eat. Have you tried a high protein low carb diet? I have heard good things about it

What were you eating? If you're like most women, you were eating absolute shit (no offense, I'm just saying  ). Were you tracking calories, getting sufficient protein, eating veggies, etc etc?

Yah and thats why its so irritating - I do have low blood sugar so I have to have a lot of small high protien kind of meals, but I was counting calories, drinking water, running, working out, everything. :wtc: I was just hoping I was missing something really obvious so I could fix it and move on....:o

keep it under 100 g's a day and try the same thing. the only way you are going to show them is to lose weight all around.

You mentioned your a mom of three, it's possible that the pregnancies did some irreperable damage to your abs. Also, is your stomach "pod" excess skin from the pregnancies or fat? If it's excess skin, you might not be able to do anything about it except for a tummy tuck or something like that. If you had C-sections, your ab muscles were cut during the process and after that it can be very difficult to regain the strength/shape that you had before the pregnancy.

BTW - 115lb for 5'4 is not overweight at all.

You don't have to go low carb to see your abs.

Okay, first of all ignore the dick heads who criticise and give bad advice. What people are trying to say is that working out will build the ab muscles up, but it will not trim your waist or make your stomach flatter. That is a common myth that I'm sure most of us believed when we started improving our bodies.

Even if you increase the size of the ab muscles, you still have a layer of fat covering them. What you need to do is to lower your body fat % to get a flatter stomach.

However, at the minute I would say you are about the right weight. Do not diet to lose more weight and don't make yourself 115lbs again. With low blood sugar, you may already be run down and tired.. making yourself underweight will only compound the problem.

What you could do is to start tracking your diet on www.fitday.com
Monitor total calories, carbs, fat and protein. Try tracking for a week and then making another thread posting up what you ate in a week. That way people will be able to help you with your diet.

I would also start going to the gym and doing a better weightlifting routine that uses your whole body, and not just your abs. This will certainly help you burn more fat. Unfortunately there is no special type of crunch or situp that will trim your waist.

Also, don't go for excessive cardio. 30 mins for 3x a week is just fine. Your diet is much more important, but the cardio is good to keep you fit and healthy. If you have low blood sugar, excessive cardio may be dangerous anyway, so don't go for 5 mile runs, ok!

Not starving myself, but doing a low cal diet like any other dieter. By little as I could, I meant I cant do as low cal as others because of my low blood sugar- so my little as I could is more than a normal dieter.

Sounds about right for your weight. Just try and make sure you get your veggies and set protein at 1 g/lb of bodyweight.
