i've enjoyed taking pics of sports events with my little S200, but its hardly the right cam for it, what would you guys suggest for a complete beginner that wont cost me thousands?

would i be better off just getting a DSLR? :dunno:

without gettin a DSLR... um I guess a canon a80 or g5. But in the long run it'd be wiser to get a Digital Rebel or D70... :dunno:

edit: Just saw the S1 IS has 10x optical zoom, but its 3.2MP

DSLR is definetly the way to go, faster response time, mroe options, better quality, lenses to match your need.

If you wanna go smaller and cheeper, check out the new panasonic coming out. Its the 5mp of the FZ10, 12x optical zoom, Leica Lens (the older version was a min aperature of F/2.8, hard to beat) image stabilized, sd memory, its going be pretty sweet. I think its called the FZ15 or FZ20 Both are new, not sure the difference yet. Check out dpreview.com for more info

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM is a great sports lens, but it will set you back a few grand.

yeah, about 5k lor the lens, and what put it on to a 1DM2, another 4500, so like 9500 for a camera and lens, don't think thats the way he wants to go.

If you wanna go DSLR, get the 70-200L Lens, (don't matter if it's the F/4, F/2.8, or F/2.8 IS) They're all equally as sharp

Yeah but if he is going to shoot indoor sports he will need a fast lens, and the f4 version wont do well unless u have very good light.
