I was talking to some guy with a digital slr and he was talking about how even though his camera claims 8.0 mega pixel, due to the comparably larger photo recepter area (not sure what its called) compared to the basic point and shoot digital cameras, his quality compare to an 8.0 mega pixel pt-n-shoot is way better.

Is this true? Any explinations? If so, is it all digital SLRs or just a select few?

apologies about not knowing the terminology. trying to learn.

It's completely true for all DSLRs. However, lenses are more expensive and difficult to design for DSLR cameras, so don't be shocked when you have to spend about 3 grand to cover the range of your P&S :(
