A&P Noob lens hood question

    Just need to know what is the exact purpose of the lens hood besides protecting the lens.. and when would you need it and when using it is a bad idea... thanks

    keep light off the lens to prevent lens flare

    I would say yes*. It serves two purposes protect from accidental dings and the main purpose to prevent/minimize lens flare.

    *as long as it fits correctly and doesn't show on the edges of your shots

    mine stay on all the time...on all of my lenses (the ones that came with hoods that is)

    the hood protects the lens. leave it on all the time unless you are using the cameras built in speed light. the hood may cast a shadow.

    Actually the HS-E1 is what makes him a pro.
