i'm not used to anime and stuff really, but i appreciate really good storylines and what-not. is there a series that you would consider the Lord of the Rings of anime in terms of epic-ness and/or scope? something that could be taken seriously by an adult viewer who has never watched anime before would be good. for instance, the first anime i ever came across that i could take seriously and find to be really good was Cowboy Bebop. however i tried to take Trigun seriously and just couldn't and really disliked it. some things i've heard that are good but wouldn't know if i liked are Neon Genesis Evangelion and Death Note, but i'm not really sure if you have to be an experienced anime fan to enjoy them. anyone with similar taste that could help me out in discovering some new (new to me; not "new" new) stuff?

i'm thinking stuff classified under the "seinen" category. i came upon that term for the first time just now.

NGE is very good... if you can take young kids piloting giant mechs serious and have an open mind about psych stuff. Berserk is made of pure win.
    some more:

    monster
    gantz
    black lagoon
    hellsing
    akira
    the big o
    gunslinger girl

Eureka Seven is great for epic-ness.

That seinen list is so bad btw. I think it's only based on the type of magazine which the manga version is serialized it. Some of them are absolutely retarded, and not really for mature audiences at all. It's hard to find good "epic" animes these days. Most of it is stupid slice of life bullshit with ecchi(sexual perversion) and the same old recycled character archetypes.

Also, Bible Black and Night Shift Nurses. I rated both "Masterpiece" on AnimeNewsNetwork.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned LA Blue Girl yet. That's what I would suggest.

I can't think of anything else to add, really. And I totally agree with these following choices:

    Eureka 7
Ghost in the Shell (both the seasons and the movies)
    Big O
    Akira
    NGE
    Elfen Leid
    Samurai Champloo

Being a Cowboy Bebop fan, I of course love Samurai Champloo as well. Amazing director.

Thanks for all the input guys! I didn't expect so much help, really. lol. i watched some Big O when they showed it on Adult Swim and it was alright.

I saw Ghost in the Shell the movie and thought it was really good. The show got a little too intricate for me and was hard for me to keep interest and/or care.

I hear a lot of you suggesting Eureka 7, so why do you guys think it applies to what you think my taste is? i don't know anything about it. but it's for college-aged individuals or older, i assume?
