    things to check:

    1. whatever that doesn't play, make sure the audio device is set the same as the one in the control panel or 'system default'.

    2. click start > run> type 'services.msc' (w/o the quotes)
make sure Windows Audio service is started/running

    3. update to the latest drivers

    4. some media players like winamp, wmp, mpc, etc, will not play a file correctly without the proper codecs. sometimes these codecs gets corrupted too.
install a codec pack like k-lite or cccp.
