I had some mishaps, especially with family, and I am 18 years old. Been out of school for almost 2 years. And its an illinois rule that GED applicants must be at least 18. I am scheduled to take my GED in november of this year. But until then, i dont do anything, because I cant. Nobody will hire me without a diploma, school is a no brainer.

Military is a thing i've always wanted. I want to deploy as soon as possible.

The air force is my first choice but i heard you need at least a GED.

Marines and Army is my next choice.

I know the services will take me, but which branch do i have a better chance of?? Are there any exceptions because I dont have a diploma??

No branch of the service will enlist you as you are. You have to have a minimum of a GED - and even with that, there are a limited number of GED slots available to each service.

Hang in there. My oldest son was in your shoes, and with even more issues on top of that. But he's a Combat Engineer now, and loving it.

Keep the faith. November isn't too far away, and shortly after that you'll be waking up to the wonderful sound of your Drill Instructor screaming in your ear. :)

I went to a recruiter a couple months ago. I told them my GED test is in november, and the recruiter said if i join the army, they can have my GED test ready in a week. Whats that all about?

You'll still have to pass the GED before you can join. He's just offering to spead the process up. Taking the test and passing it are up to you.

Bottom line: you have to at least pass the GED before you can join the military. No GED = no military. If you don't pass the test, no recruiter in the country can enlist you.

I have experience with neither of those. But there are a buttload of marines and army hanging around here that would love to pound the asscrap out of each other to prove to you which one you should join. :mamoru:

Yea i'll pass the GED test, but will the airforce speed it up for me like the marines/army will??

  8. You can get a 20k signing bonus + quick shipment with the Army even with a GED. If you have a GED and get a 50 or better on the ASVAB, you're eligible. :hsugh:

My cousin (who wanted to be a Marine, but failed the ASVAB :mamoru: ) was looking into that.

What is this 20k signing bonus that the recruiter keeps telling me. I thought it was BS to get to me sign up fast but damn, is it true??

  10. It's true, but I think it's like 6 years. :hsd:

As far as I know, there are two ways to get $20 enlistment bonus for new recruits. One is via signing up for a six-year enlistment with the 18X option, which is Special Forces. You sign up for this, and if you make it through the selection process and graduate, you get your $20K. If you aren't one tough motherfucker, this is not for you.

The other way is a six-year enlistment in the 89D MOS. This is an Explosive Ordinance Disposal specialist. Again, you will need to graduate from the training before you will get any of the $$. And again, this option is not for everyone.

Follow this link for an MOS list that is authorized an enlistment bonus:

Rangers and Special Forces are two different things. Dark will jump in this thread soon enough and he'll be able to shed more light on it for you. He is Ranger qualified, and will be going after a Special Forces slot over the next few months.

  14. If your ASVAB/GT score is up to par, I'm pretty sure you can be a Ranger. GED or HS.

but bottom line he has to either pass GED or grad HS. No way around that.

  16. :mamoru: Yeah.

GED's are easy unless you're an idiot. I know people who got their GED in days, or a week. :ugh:

Damn cook county GED bullshit. You need 40% to pass the damn test, its a given diploma for $35.

I just want to study so i can try to get in to the air force. If not, then ranger school is where im headed.

you'll be okay, jsr. fuck - my son had to overcome more thna just the GED to join. Oh man, did he ever have to overcome shit. Hang in there.

In the meantime, there's an ASVAB study test you can take online for free at military.com. Just take that fucker over and over. Figure out what you don't know and work on that stuff. It'll keep you busy and it'll help you qualify for whatever you want to do when you can enlist.

Same boat as you, In the new year I'm getting my Greencard/GED and coming to the states to enlist with Marines/Rangers. If my ASVAB is high enough I'll likely sign a Ranger Contract as Dark suggested I do. If not than Marine 11b here I come :hsd:

I have more respect for a guy who has to scratch and claw his way in the door even before he ever gets to basic than I do for some mamas boy that gets dropped off at MEPS and hand delivered all ready to sign and go.

but that's probably just the wiskey talkin.
