J.D. Power and Associates 2004 Initial Quality Study
    April 28, 2004, 1:19 PM

The rankings of the major automakers in J.D. Power and Associates' annual initial quality survey, which is based on responses from more than 51,000 people who bought or leased new 2004 cars and trucks.

The survey is done in the first 90 days of ownership.

The figures represent the number of problems per 100 vehicles.

Rankings exclude American Isuzu Motors Inc. because of a small sample and Maserati North America because of an insufficient sample:

    ------

    Manufacturer Problems/100 vehicles
Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. 101
    American Honda Motor Co. 102
    Hyundai Motor America 102
    BMW of North America 116
    INDUSTRY AVERAGE 119
    General Motors Corp. 120
    DaimlerChrysler 123
    Subaru of America Inc. 123
    Ford Motor Co. 127
    Mitsubishi Motors North America 130
    Volkswagen of America Inc. 141
    Nissan North America 147
    American Suzuki Motor Corp. 149
    Kia Motors America 153
Porsche Cars North America Inc. 159

    ------

Nissan's score dropped to 147 problems per 100 vehicles with 12 more problems than the 135 recorded last year. But sales of the Nissan Titan (search) pickup truck, Quest minivan and Infiniti Armada, all made in Mississippi, have been disappointing, industry analysts said.

"If you collectively look at the truck products they have most recently launched, there could be some concern," said Jeff Schuster, senior director of global forecasting with J.D. Power.

Virtually every nameplate improved and nearly three-quarters of models," Walters said. Aparrently not the sack of shit nissian.

I don't trust JD power for shit anymore

they had Ford and Mercury on opposite ends of their list when most of the vehicles are the fucking same... how does that work out?

same with Infiniti being #1 in the past and Nissan being a bit over average...

fuck JD Power and Associates :o

Ah, the always hilarious fools who say the survey is biased :mamoru:

It must be some big conspiracy.

It also has to do with how the cars are built ;)

Getting rid of humans and replacing them with robots has made huge leaps for them, and now that the bugs are worked out they are bringing the tech to the US.

And yet CU reports almost the same info

They must be useless too, right?

If so then who do you rely on for your product quality reports?

very reliable engines, inexpensive but durable interiors, and no r&d mechanicals...sound pretty nice to me.

there is no differentiation between "severity" of problems, ie faulty brakes shows up as one problem per 100 cars, so does bad windsheild wiper blade

there is no differentiation between models. it does nothing but give a general view of the total product line.

i dont really care about initial quality. what about after 20k miles? 30K? etc. find yourself a hyundai fleet car and tell me its held up as well as a honda fleet car with the same mileage.

when i want to find out about a car im interested in, i read forums and test drive.

im not trying to pick on hyundai :dunno: they just arent at the quality level of honda.

Take into account Nissan has a lot of new vehicles being released and no first production vehicle is perfect for anyone. Nissan still makes great cars
