one name wasn't good enough? they had to use a second almost-identical name?

That just seems wasteful. Maybe that's why Nikon stuff costs so much.. you're paying for the additional branding.

the 5D mk II is only 2,700... not too shabby considering what it can do.

    I don't get your point.

Most people aren't looking to buy a 1Ds Mk III.. there are plenty of alternatives for even 1/10 the price.

Most Nikon users ARE looking to buy lenses that cost more than their Canon counterparts.

"Maybe that's why Nikon stuff costs so much."

I'm not getting your point either. You specifically said Nikon stuff costs alot, bottom line. Then I said Canon makes a 7,200 dollar camera. You never said anything about it being what most people are looking to buy, you just simply said nikon's stuff costs alot. So I pointed out Canon makes cameras that cost as much as a d700 and a d3 combined. That's all, how does it not make any sense? Just because Nikon makes a 10,000 dollar 600mm f/4 doesn't mean most people want to buy it..

I have no idea how much any Nikon stuff costs. All I know is that I often see Nikon people in OTAP complaining about the cost of glass.

you're right. they don't make a camera in that league.

they make a 1dmk3 competitor, both costing the same (~$4k). :wavey:

Nikkor has had the name forever.

Even when Canon started making cameras, they had Nikkor make lenses for them.

That does bring up a question for me though... What would you guys recommend as far as "decent" glass, on a tight budget. i'm talking sub~$700. No it doesn't have to be the best on the planet, but anything better than my kit lens(es) would be appreciated.

if you are on a budget for glass i'd recommend the 18-200 VR. it's got really solid optics for the price, and it costs less than 700 dollars.

Nikkor was the original entity name when 3 optics companies merged in Japan. Nikon was their Camera line's name, which came out later.

IIRC, the line name "Nikon" became widely recognizeable so it just naturally progressed as a brand name.
