I'm looking to get a decent zoom lens for my father's D70. I was thinking about getting the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor lens. It runs about $450 which is the price I'd like to stay in. Does anyone else have any other suggestions in that range? Is it even possible to get a decent lens at that price? Halp. :hs:

The 55-200 VR is $249 where I work. Its not as long, but its nice and compact and has VR.

You could also get the older 70-300 for a lot less money than its VR counterpart.

there are 3 different versions of this lens...the more expensive one (non-VR) isn't horrible but it does lack a little color. i've never tried the VR version

    Sigma 70-300mm APO

    :dunno:

I like mine...it is my worst lens but it still is ok for when I need to go longer.

My 70-300 is just extra weight in my bag...I rarely use it.

18-200 VR II (Great all around lens) I have a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 but its about 1K for a new one.

Try the 55-200VR, I hear its pretty good for the price, and everyone I have heard likes the 70-300 VR as well. The glass is not fast enough for my tastes anymore.

to make you feel better, i was shooting with the non 70-300mm (whale watching) and at 300 it was useless, i had to throw on the 18-200 vr.

My friend was using a 70-300mm VR no problem and at 300mm there was minimal blur and in most pics sharp and clear whale tails ;)

I just dont use those focal lengths at all if I can avoid it. The quality from it is just not worth it. The chromatic aberration this lens creates is just horrendous sometimes and the images are pretty soft. I mean, for the price it gets the job done...it'll give you the zoom youre looking for, but the quality is not up there. One day I'll upgrade but as a college student I'll just have to live with this for now.
