I done a little research and it seems that the sb-600 flash will be the right choice for my needs vs budget. At least for now...

In the mean time, is the onboard flash really that worthless? I have seen much about it, but what I have read says "it blows".

This weekend I will be shooting people as they arrive for an event.
    Inside
    Moderate lighting in the building
They will be posing/standing for the picture and I can get as close as I need to

    Nothing too professional...

Will I be really disappointed with the onboard flash? I really don't have the $$$ today to run out an buy the flash, but I would guess I would have to find it in order to avoid losing all the shots.

Just got the D90 about a week ago and haven't gotten a good chance to test out the flash (all my shots have been outside during the day)

Just learned about the gig today...and won't have time to run out at get the flash in the morning, so I would have to get it today. Otherwise I would just screw around tonight when it gets dark and test...

i think one of the main reasons people complain about onboard flashes is because you can't bounce it around to make the light softer, and the pictures you take end up looking rather shitty. i have an external flash so i haven't tried this, but i think i saw this on here awhile ago and it looks pretty interesting if you wanna try to save some money for now:

i'm pretty nubbish though so maybe my opinion is rubbish

    Here is what you do

    Find a person

Emulate what you think is worst case scenario with lights.

Take a picture... figure it out if it is ' that bad' for what you are using it for... I mean shit dude you have the camera in hand... How lazy can you be?

Now your options are, use the on board flash and deal with it.

Use a really fast lens and high ISO and try to wing it with ambient light (I have managed many a pretty dark events with a fast lens and a good 1600iso).

    Rent a light.

Buy and return if you don't need.

Buy and keep the SB and always have it... flash is the #1 item when used properly that can increase the quality of your photography... just saying.

Hell go buy a cheap vivatar... bounce off ceiling.

    Done.

    Rent a flash.

But seriously dude, don't be that fucking lazy... you have the camera, how can you live with yourself turning to the internet to ask how bad it is.... YOU FUCKING HAVE IT... GO FIND THE FUCK OUT.

sb-600 is $225. i love it. put a nice stoffen over it too.

the onboard is harsh and only works with a short lens.

Thank you for the advice...however apparently your reading comprehension isn't as great as your photography skills. I already explained why the "try it out myself" idea won't work.

I don't have access to the venue until tomorrow
Once I'm there, I can't go out and buy a flash if I realize it is too dark
I can wait until it gets dark here and mess around with the flash tonight...but by then the camera stores will be closed.
I didn't find out about this until TODAY...so I couldn't have "planned better ahead of time".

Only thing I ever used my onboard for was to fire off my SB600 remotely. I now have two SB600s and Cybersync set up.

I wasn't really passionate about photography until i got my SB-800 and saw what simply bouncing the flash off the ceiling did for my pictures. Having good light is paramount to good photography. I have a 600 as a 2nd, it's a great unit. Buy it.

Hope you made out OK, my post was a little angry as my morning masturbation session was interrupted by a debt collector 3 times claiming I am trying to skirt a $4.72 medical bill (yeeaahhhh), a) I don't know what you can even get for $4 at a doctor, and b) I am probably one of the richest fuckers on this board, why the fuck would I skirt a bill....

My hate had to be directed somewhere after they hung up, unfortunately your post was open, and my dick was chafed .

I decided to buy one and the guy at the camera store convinced me that the SB-600 would meet my needs. I'm so glad I bought it...worked out perfect and I would have been FUuuuuucked without it.
