I've been looking at the two and can't really figure out which is better. they both seem to have their own advantages and disadvantages.

I like how the 70 has 1/8000 shutter speed, but it doesn't have high speed USB support :ugh2:

It also looks like the two use different types of cards. Taken from dpreview:

    D50: Secure Digital (SD) card
D70: Compact Flash Type I or II, Microdrive supported

It looks like the D50 might be the better choice for a beginner, but I want to hear what others think. Am i right in my assumptions?

The D70 is the better camera of the two, but you're somewhat right in saying the D50 might be better for a beginner. I'm a complete photo noob and I have no idea what I'm doing, but I bought the D70 with the idea that I'll grow into it, and I won't have to worry about upgrading like I would if I got the D50.

the d70 is a better camera, and about the high speed usb thing, that is solved by a 15 dollar card reader

the second dial and LCD light would be worth that to me, plus the faster shutter speed...and i like CF cards better than those tiny SD's

Overall the D70 is a better camera.

The D50 does have better high ISO performance though. Also it gives a more DC like picture off camera (more contrast, don't seem as gray-ish).

I just ended up buying a D50 for $528 after shipping, plus another $75 for a 2 gig SD card at 80x speed :run:

hopefully it'll all be here early next week :run: :run:  :x:

I have no idea. That's why I ended up going with the D50. It seemed to fit more of my needs :o

Let us know after you get it how annoyed you are with having to hold down a button while using your rear command wheel to change your aperture.

after you figure the camera out, be prepared to ditch that 18-55 lens and get something better.

    I just bought a D70s :noes:

I've wanted a "good" camera for years, and with my largish tax refund this year, I bought myself the camera as a graduation present.

Now I have to figure out how to use it. :o

I also think someone else should make a D50 vs D70 thread because this is the first time this has been discussed on OT.

Yeah, I made a post before I ordered it and thankfully someone warned me about that website. I ended up ordering it from BeachCamera for $862 with shipping and ordered a 2Gig Card from E-bay for $75. The camera is coming in today but the card comes in later in the week...Im just gonna borrow one from my cousin until it comes in.
