    for $599 with an 18-55 lens. Ouch, Canon. That is going to take a pretty big bite out of XTi sales, it'll be interesting to see how Canon reacts.

    And I'm not talking about how the cameras compare in specs, handling, image quality or anything else. I'm thinking from a marketing and sales perspective Nikon is doing some really interesting stuff....I wonder if they are hiring. ;)

    It's cute, but I've got 3 non-AF-s lenses that I can't part with.

    Alicante - nice. It's true.

    Why? It's not even a year old, and it works great.... that's retarded. There's going to be a D3h before a new D200. D200s won't count, if they even make one.

    .

    The D200 is in a fantastic position in the market, there isn't any real competition for it from any other manufacturer, it has nearly all of the features of the D2Xs in a smaller body, it's less money than the 5D and has better construction than the 30D....what earthly reason would Nikon have to upgrade it at this point after only a year on the market and what could they possibly do to it to make it significantly better?

    Nikon is probably concentrating on a D2h and D2Xs replacement now to compete against Canon's upcoming 1D_ replacements. Compare:

    Nikon D40 -> nothing
    Nikon D50 -> Canon Rebel XTi
    Nikon D80 -> Canon 30D
    Nikon D200 -> nothing
    nothing -> Canon 5D
    Nikon D2Hs -> Canon 1DMKIIn
    Nikon D2Xs -> Canon 1DsMKII

    As soon as stock is depleted the D70s, Rebel XT and 20D will disappear so that leaves the above lineup. Look at it segment for segment and you can tell where each manufacturer needs to spend some R&D dollars.

    i dunno about that, the d200 and 30d are closer competitors than the the d80 and 30d.

    canon still owns the world over the d200 though, thats where Nikon needs to spend their money, focus on getting the pros back to nikon.

    It's more comparable to the 5d than anything, Just minus the Fool frame factor.

    Oh yeah, and on the D40, it's got that gay ass eyepeice like the d70 :riaa:

    Yea I don't know why they compare the 30d to the D200, the d200 is clearly in a class of it's own compared to the 30d. I think the only classification that the d200 and 30d have in common is price range. :o

    And I also believe that the d200 and 5d should be competitors but the 5d has a larger price tag and it's fool frame and it has a few extra megafoolixels.

    The D40 is quite dumbed down... and don't forget...... it's only 6 MP, as opposed to XTi's 10.

    The target markets for these cameras will spring for 10 MP any day.

    "Only" 6MP? Unless you're printing posters, that argument is hackneyed and played out. 6MP is more than sufficient for 8x10 prints and the intarweb... and saves on hard drive space to boot.

    Moral of the story: Average consumers are idiots. :wavey:

    I disagree -- the D80 & 400D are direct competitors...with this dumbed down D40, Nikon can pull even more of those "borderline DSLRs" into the fray, as they cost the same price as those big P&S. I don't think Canon has an answer for it...yet.

    technically the G7 out performs it in many ways, and obviously the d40 beats it in others

    My D50 is "only" 6MP and I have been VERY happy with it. I've shot over 19,400 pics with it so far...

    Did you comprehend what I said? I said to the average consumer. Megapixels sell regardless of what the photography community knows.

    No, to the average consumer, $$$ >>> MP. That's why P&S cameras still sell from 6MP to 10MP. What consumers believe is that more MP is always better, but you have to pay for it so they end up thinking with their wallet. There's a $300 MSRP price differential between the D40 and the Rebel XTi making this camera really targeted to the higher end P&S user that wouldn't have been forking over the cash for an XTi in the first place.

    Canon doesn't have any answer to this camera and the average consumer isn't going to drop $600 on a used camera on ebay when they can get a brand new one with a warranty from a big box retailer.

    And I don't think you can call the D40 all that dumbed down. When you consider what the average consumer would use it for, there isn't any functional difference between it an the D50 or XTi. You certainly don't need 10MP, 9pt AF, and anti-dust to take a snapshot of your new baby to share with grandma via email, for example.

    However, we have only been talking about what this camera will do to Canon, and that's not the entire story. Consider what the D40 will do to Olympus and Pentax DSLR sales, considering that they have been targeting the space under the XTi with the E330, E500 and K100d etc. Having a decent Nikon in that space should have an impact on them too.
