uncompressed 14-bit.. why not go for the highest possible quality?

Just to let you know there's no quality difference between uncompressed and lossless compressed.

Does it take longer to uncompress?

any time i hear the word compressed, i never think it can be as good.. even if its a .01% difference.. Memory is cheap.. why not?

Would lossless compressed result in slower FPS?

It may be faster to work during post processing, as those data do not need to be uncompressed on the fly to be changed.

When you zip up bunch of your images, and then unzip them later. Does the jpeg lose quality?

    That is your answer.

edit : If your NEF is made up of "100000000001000000000000001000000001111111111111000000000"
The compression just says 1[10 0s]1[14 0s]1[8 0s][13 1s][9 0's]. And it gets intrepreted later, so you do not lose any data.

I'm certain that uncompressed results in slower FPS. Each image takes longer to write to card (because they are bigger), which means your buffer will fill up faster.

edit: As you can see from above example, compression doesn't take whole lot of computing power. It would be my guess that it's quicker for expeed to compress data than for a D300 to write to a CF card (this may change with next gen of CF cards?, but then by that time the new cam's processing unit will be faster too :mamoru:)

the biggest FPS change you'll see is 12 vs 14 bit. Someone posted an article here on OT a few weeks back where the guy said that with 14 bit it changes to like 2.5 FPS.

Yeah saw that - been doing more reading. Looks like you can save exposure stuff in 14 bit but overall 12 bit is sufficient.
