So I'm going to be shooting some jets on Saturday/Sunday for work. I need something that will reach at least 200mm. It needs to be quick since these will be flyby shots at high speed.

I was thinking about the 18-200 VR, but I don't know if that's quick enough and I don't know if I'd be able to find one (i'm leaving tomorrow afternoon :noes: )

I currently have the 18-55 kit lens, but need something with more reach.

    Suggestions on lenses?

    budget?

oh, and if you're shooting into the sky, on a sunny day, will you really need to shoot wide open?

I'd think focus speed would be more important...

Hmm, no more than 600-700 at this point.

I was thinking a 70-300 would be nice, but 70 might be a little long

I don't think a teleconverter works on that 70-300 -- not without a drastic reduction in quality. Plus, you're looking at a F/10 minimum. I hope you'd have some really good light to shoot in.

Rent the glass, or settle for the 70-300.

I did an airshow with the 55-200 piece of shit, worked fine...

If you have the cash, I'd recommend the 70-200 2.8, got one a little while back and couldn't be happier.

I'm looking at the 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR. I'm guessing it would probably be quick enough. but fuck, for $299 at the local camera shop, it doesn't make it sound as nice of an option.

Also, the 70-200 2.8 is just about a grand out of my price range :io:

by chance, do they still sell the non vr version (the one that was coupled with the 18-55 and d50 a while back)? that's the one I used, and VR seems pointless for what you are shooting...

I have a copy of that lens, that'll I sell if you want it. I bought 2.8 zoom. The glass wasn't fast enough for my taste. Let me know if you want pictures of it...I have the box and unfilled warranty card. :o

First of all, for fast action, VR is going to be close to worthless. To stop action such as fast moving objects like jets, you need a flash. Better pray that your camera can handle 1/500 flash sync.

I second the vote on renting a lens with an f/2.8 (which will be WAY out of your budget if you buy) at a nearby camera store. I don't know what you guys have there in NM so I can't recommend a place.

    Get a monopod.

ANY 70-300 would be fine for what you can budget for. Next time when you take a job be prepared! And the 70-300 definitely will NOT work with a teleconverter

hahahahaa......listen to this guy he knows what he is talking about. I would recommend getting a wide angle lens and a really good flash then talking to the event organizers and see if the jets can fly really close to you (acording to the SB-600 manual 65 feet is within range) so you can "stop the action".

299 is way over priced...they're selling NEW for 225 on Amazon

Best Buy has the non VR version for 249, which MSRP is 199:ugh:
