Sometimes I don't feel like carrying my whole kit around, especially on vacations and what not. Do you think I should buy an 18-200 VR or a nice P&S like the G10/11?

P&S. 18-200 is soft and slow.

skip it. it's mediocre at best, i'd probably go for the 18-105 from the D90 kit for a lightweight walkaround. i bought one with my d300, sold it shortly after....and a month later bought another one, which i ended up selling shortly there after. then i picked up the nikon 17-55 f/2.8

however it's doesn't exactly cover the telephoto, maybe i'll pick up a 70-300vr to deal with the telephoto end....since the 70-200 2.8 was a pain in the ass to carry on vacation.

I really like my 18-200 for vacation, one lens, small case.

Sure not a prime, but very convenient and make good enough pictures.

if you think the 18-200 sucks, then the 18-105 d90 kit lens is a hunk of shit

i had the 18-105 and sold it. it's soft as balls

well then i must have had a shitty copy of the 18-200, or 2 shitty copies because when i compared shots from the 18-200 and the 18-105 the 18-105 was sharper. :fawk:

needless to say, i like my 17-55 better than either of those.

I loved my 18-200 esp on my europe trip last year. It was soft in areas, but it also was sharp enough, esp so I could enjoy the trip...

This set was my main set from London (was there for 3 weeks).

    Please enjoy.

It might be soft, but it was also very good for vacation and just day to day outings.... my $.02 Now that I am on FF I kinda miss having that lens.

    Quirky, but love it.

Only REAL complaint is reach. Before I purchased it, I had not used and DX lenses, and so became accustomed to the 1.5x multi.

Definitely best one lens solution to be had, imo.

I was at glacier national park and I switched to my Sigma 10-20 only a few times to take shots from the top of the pass and it was a pain in the ass.. every other picture I used the 18-200 and I used it at 200 a lot to get closer shots of wildlife. I would def. not have hiked the 9 miles with prime lenses 1- because of the weight and size and 2- because of the risk of damaging a prime lens over there.
