I went to a camera store today, and the chick who was helping me out told me that the nikon 18-55 kit lens was as good as the nikon 50 1.8 in terms of image quality at F5. Is this correct?

I originally went there to check out the tokina 11-17. I can get it for $560 out the door. Should I get it? :run:My wife would kill me though.

    Girth would say buy it.
    Jcolman would say buy it.
But I need opinions of those who are fiscally responsible. :o

hmmm... the 18-55 DX II is pretty sharp, more so than it's predecessor. I don't have a direct comparison, however, to tell you if it's as sharp as the 50. I imagine she wanted you to buy something more expensive than the 50 1.8. camera store people will often tell you anything assuming that most the people who come in there don't know much about photography

Even stopped down, the prime will still be sharper although the gap between the two lenses will start to get smaller as you reach the sweet spot on the kit lens, wherever that is.

For a $110... its not a bad lens. I've never used it to know though. :dunno:

true. I don't think the sweet spot for the kit lense is f/5. it's more like f/8, iirc from using my mom's camera
