absolutely NOT the worst lens. check my flickr. 75% of my shots are with the 28-80mm. it's cheap and plasticy, but it's SHARP and has great contrast. this is actually one of the few places where I agree 110% with Rockwell.

take it from someone who actually OWNS the lens and has used it for over a year....

    example:

blah blah blah I won't post my whole stream...just go look. if it's not shot @ 50mm, it's probably with my 28-80mm. the proof is in the pudding.

more examples here: http://www.dpchallenge.com/lens.php?LENS_ID=1301 and http://www.trekearth.com/photos.php?cat=lens&id=9454

if you need a cheap walk-around, BUT UNDERSTAND it won't last you forever nor will it feel like a quality lens, this is your ticket. also, on a cropped sensor, this is a 42-120mm lens.

IF this is the worst lens Nikon makes, then Nikon doesn't make a bad lens

let me also add that you could do better, but you'll be paying $300+ vs. the $50 for this lens

I have "owned" several of these (came with D50 bodies we ordered for work) and they've been nothing but crap. People said the 18-55's were shit and they've held up and produced much better photos than the 28-80's. My personal experience with them...and we owned probably 5-7 of them.
