After you upload your run to your Nike+ page it can take a little bit for it to show up on the challenges page. Just keep that in mind.

I'm slowly becoming a runner. Former fatty. In on this after I buy a nano, shoe pouch and it warms up.

Although the fact that it is the fourth and someone already has run a marathon is intimidating.

I couldn't resist so I went and bought a nano, Nike+ and arm band today...

...only to find out that the arm band was for the old style (skinny) nano.

Anyway - I timed myself and ran a 10 min mile. I am a new (2 month) runner, and literally just began jogging outside on Friday. What do I do to increase speed?

    Thanks!

    get a running partner.

when I run on my own, i usually rock 3.5 miles in like 35 minutes....but when i do my running test, i run 3 miles in 21 minutes (since i run with a gang of other marines) It's not the best time but hey, its better than before.

:naughty: trust me I wont be running for a while I need to recover, but people will catch up fast if you saw the last one in was really close from 1st-5th. its really fun this challenge.

we should take pics before the challenge and then after to see if we had any changes.

Best way to increase speed is to increase distance. Your pace will naturally speed up.

I think it's more important to increase miles first. Worry about speed later. Your speed should naturally increase somewhat. After you get a base established running hills for strength will help your speed. You can also run intervals... Warmup, sprint (90%-ish peak effort) for 1/8 - 1/4 mile and then jog for 1/4 - 1/2 mile, rinse, repeat.

Work to a goal whether it be a race (5K, 10K, etc.) or a weekly/monthly mileage goal, get to a 30 - 40 mile week and you won't be able to keep the weight.

Thanks for the help - I have a goal to run a 5k, but I'm worried I might overtrain. everything I have read says that new runners should be careful because of microfractures, etc. But I like it too much!

Another question - I lift weights 3 times a week. How do you manage leg day and running?

used to run five 5Ks per week while weight training... your body gets used to it

How long had you been running? I want to run today even though i did yesterday, but I don't want to risk injury.

like yourself, i was never a runner... i started running 3 years ago from a dead stop...

key word is "used to" since i had knee surgery and still trying to gain back what was able to do... i ran those 5Ks for 2 yrs straight or so (min of 3x week) before surgery

Did the running contribute to the knee, or was it an unrelateed injury.

    unrelated... tore it playing football

PCL is a pretty thick ligament... most ppl tear it during auto accidents when the dashboard rams in to the knee/shin area
