There was a good thread a few months ago that had a lot if interesting info about leupold and their current state. It definitely swayed me from purchasing anything leupold anytime soon.

I have heard a few things as of late about their customer service...

I think my problem now is I'd like to keep my purchase around $1000 but good glass ain't cheap..

Ahhhh yes, I was wondering when that was going to pop up here....

I'm a Leupy whore, but what I look for in a scope is likely much different than what say, Terry Cross does. I personally think the 3.5x10 VXIII's/MK'4s are some of the most well thought out GP 'glass out there, and the M8 6x is quickly growing much favor as well.

That being said, Leupolds are best when they are cheap. When they are cheap, they are usually old (notice you don't hear about older Leupy's breaking NEARLY as much), and at a price point that I feel is in line with what they offer.

If you are buying a new MK4 at retail or near, you should be buying a NF instead.

hmm. Maybe I should look into some older glass....
My problem is with this being my first scoped rifle, I have no experience to base my purchase off of. So I do the next best thing and ask the 3 people I know personally who I consider knowledgeable, and damn if they didn't all give me completely different opinions.

So part of me says I should just buy something cheaper and shoot, and shoot and shoot some more. Then once I get some experience I can upgrade based on what I feel would better suite me. But at the same time I'd like to "buy once, cry once"

I'm leaning towards a nighforce as close to $1k as I can find

That's very dissapointing, they were really high on the list for a long time. Why would you pay $400 for a chinese made scope when a dozen other companies will sell you one for less than half, maybe even a third of the price?

DrewDown, I'm not sure of the features you're looking for, but check out Zeiss stuff. From what I've seen it's a little more expensive than Leupold but less than NightForce. The optical quality is excellent though, clear as a bell.

I ended up getting a 2.5-10x Nightforce vs Leup a few months ago.

Completely satisfied. It did cost a bit more, but that is completely forgotten now.
Buy once, cry once..and all that.

Go with the NF, at least it's made in the USA. Leupies use to be made here, now they are outsourced. If you can find an old leupie at a good price, get that; but otherwise go with the NF

The only problem with the Zeiss is that they might not have enough elevation.

NF is made in Japan except for 2 scopes

Yeah they don't grind their own glass, and in fact there are only a few companies who do (zeiss, and I think trijicon [could be wrong on the trijicon]). Leupies are being outsourced to azn sweat shops.

I'm at work today but it should be ready for pick up Monday. Maybe even tomorrow if I'm lucky. :x:

I need to order something quick. Now I'm looking at Ziess. for the money they seem pretty legit. I was reading good things about them on the Hide. Plus one of the Captains at my station can get them at cost.
I can get the Conquest 6.5-20x50 for under 900 bucks. Can't argue with that as apposed to something similar from NightForce. Although the tube diameter is only 1 inch as opposed to 30mm so hopefully that will give me enough adjustment for some long range shots :dunno:
