I plan on taking some pics around my University tomorrow night; I was just wondering about some general tips for night shots.

I really just want some nice skyline or building/sign shots. FWIW I have a Nikon N55, a Sigma 20mm 1.8f wide angle, and a Kodak 80-200mm zoom. I don't however, have a tripod. Should I invest in a mini tripod to take out with me? Lugging a big one doesn't seem appealing, but I know for long exposure shots...or at least really slow shutter speeds, stability will be very important to how the shots come out.

My whole goal here is to not use flash. Wow I really hate flash, or at least the flash on my camera. It could just be that I'm an amateur though.

Any tips would be appreciated! :)

A tripod is a must ... and use your timer so you don't knock your camera while pressing your shutter release... or a remote would be even better

Hmmm...then the problem is, if I get the mini one, what to rest it on...I might just get a mini one, it'll probably be more useful to me ATM.

If you go to a super store like best buy or something you can prob get a package with a large one and a small one ... but to be honest I think you will find the large one more usefull.

You can get a smaller sized tripod that extends to a decent length, getting the best of both worlds. Quantaray offers a small sized tripod that extends to 4ft for $20. That way you dont have to lug a huge tripod around but you get a decent sized tripod that you don't have to set on anything. Tonight I learned there is far too much construction going in on Atlanta.

Tomorrow I'm going armed with a tripod though, some shots will be a little bit easier.

Like everyone else said... tripod. Without it, hardly any of your pics will come out nice.
