Thinking of going active duty after my deployment...is there a way I can cut down my 8 year contract with the Guard to 4 with Active Army?

Your comittment will always be eight years, but you can probably do four years active and the rest IRR. Your Guard unit can not block your transfer to active duty.

Talk with an active duty recruiter.

You would have to do a conditional release, here's what you need to do:
    Talk to a recruiter
Have them complete a DDform 368
Have your current commander sign it
Sign your Active Duty DD4 series (contract) You usually sign this the day you ship out
Make sure your unit gets a copy so they can take you off their books
    ???
    Profit

Also, there is no minumim or max time needed in your current guard contract, once you contract to go active you start a whole new commitment.

(I process these actions on a regular basis so if you have any more questions feel free to ask)
