Ok I want to get into using newsgroups but have no clue how to use them. I have a MAC and need to know where to start. I'm told you have to pay for these, any recommendations?

News server access. Astraweb has a $11/mon for unlimited with SSL, 20 connections, etc. Search to find the info in one of the recent newsgroup threads in the main forum.

    Unison to download .nzb files.

newzbin.com access (need an account and to be invited plus you have to pay like 25¢ a month to download) or access to one of the other free nzb search sites.

    exactly what he said...

you'll also need something to unpack the rar files (i use unarchiver) and if some of the files need repairing using the .par files, i recommend using macpar deluxe...

Ok might be a stupid question but why do you need newzbin.com access? You can't get access to content with just the astraweb server access?

Sure you can access the content manually through the news app (Unison). But .nzb files are the true magic. Say you have a .nzb for a game or whatever. Simply open it with Unison and it tells the app where to find all the pieces of that file and downloads them so you don't have to manually find the group then all the posts (can be hundreds if it's a large file) and download them all one by one. Newzbin.com requires you get an invite and then pay for credits (costs like $11 a year or so) but there are other sites that have smaller indexes of the news servers that are free. I'm sure others can suggest what those sites might be.

Ok thanks, I finally get that. So I purchased an account with astraweb, downloaded unison and signed up with NZBsRus.com. I'm downloading a bluray, two files at once and both are only 200k. Is there a way to speed this up? I have a 25mb connection and I know it can go faster. I was pushing over 1.5MB in torrents.

    yeap, just crank it up...
you can do up to 20 connections, i run 6 at home, for you, you can probably max out at 10 or 11....
more isn't always better, run 2 or 3 more than what maxes your speed out...

One more issue. I've downloaded three blurays already. When I try to extract them, I receive a corrupt file error. How do I extract these properly? I downloaded macpar but can't seem to fix them with that. Which files do I extract, the par or rar? Shit has me confused.

if you spend a few minutes understanding sabnzbd and getting it set up properly, you never have to deal with manually extracting or repairing or any of that shit again. if you have newzbin you can just click off what you want as a favorite and it will grab the nzb, download the files, verify, download pars if necessary, repair, extract, move the finished files to the proper location based on what it is, and clean up all the intermediary files.

Ok I've tried extracting the rar's on all three downloads. Everyone gives me a corrupt file error with unarchiver. I've extracted hundreds of rar's before when I was using torrents so I'm not a complete moron.

Maybe I'll have a look at sabnzbd.

    Thanks for the responses.

just use sabnzbd, start it up, after you add your news server info, it'll open a webpage for you in your browser when you fire it up. just click to add the nzb and it will download, unpack, par up, and leave you with exactly what you want in the complete directory in your downloads.

    http://www.sabnzbd.org/

    What is SABnzbd?

SABnzbd is a free/open-source cross-platform binary newsreader written in Python.

It simplifies the process of downloading from Usenet dramatically, thanks to its friendly web-based user interface and advanced built-in post-processing options that automatically verify, repair, extract and clean up posts downloaded from Usenet. SABnzbd also has a fully customizable user interface, and offers a complete API for third-party applications to hook into.

you can even punch a hole in your router to go to the website and upload a nzb and have it ready for when you get home, or whatever. it's truly fucking awesome

So how secure are the dowloads? Do people get sued using newgroups like they do with torrents?

What you download is between you and the newsgroup provider and they don't keep logs. It's MUCH more secure then BitTorrent or other methods.
