I have fond memories of my old MiniDisc recorder. It was the top of the line model when it came out, and it still has better bass than the iPod does. The newest crop of Hi-MD recorders claim to be able to play back MP3s. Given their 1GB-per-disc storage capacity, that makes them a reasonable idea for a new mp3 player for moi --- IF they don't require transcoding the mp3s to Sony's ATRAC format. The website is disturbingly ambiguous on this point. Does anyone know if the new Hi-MD portables actually PLAY mp3s directly?
