I have yet to get into web page design and such. I'm wondering is HTML the things still or have things gone the way of XTML? Where would be a good place to start?

Start with html. I'd suggest finding a good book or tutorial... Once you are familiar with html you can start looking at things like php and css...

For basic web design, learn XHTML and CSS. This alone, along with a good eye for design (and understanding of color), will allow you to become a web designer.

To become a web programmer, it would be best if you had a background in programming, like Java or C++, to understand the concepts of programming. Web languages include ASP.NET, ASP (although ASP.NET now supercedes ASP), PHP, JSP (using Java language) and others.
