ive been lifting 3x a week for the last 2 months, doing monday-back&shoulders, wednesday-legs, friday-chest&arms and doing cardio stuff on other days. i was thinking of adding a fourth lifting workout a week on sundays, but that would mean that i would lift 2 days in a row, with the lifts changing each week (because i would still stick with the 3 differnet muscle groups).

this means that some weeks i would be doing sunday-chest&arms right into monday-back&shoulders. is that bad?

    different question:
if ive just doing back and ive done pull ups and im moving to lat pull downs, but the machine is busy, how bad is it if i switch to a shoulder exercise until the machine is free? basically, is it important to do all the same muscle group exercises at once or can you mix around as machines become available?

    thanks a lot!

    1) lifting 2 days in a row isn't bad... just lifting utilizing the same muscle groups two days in a row is bad b/c it doesn't give the muscles enough time to rest (don't do chest 2 days in a row)

    2) do compound movements before isolation movements (for example... do squats before leg extensions)... you could always ask to work in on a busy machine, also

well ok, fine, but the machines i use are things like a back t-bar, and i use a weight assisted pullup machine for the last 2 sets because i cant do enough to make it effective otherwise. i also use a quad extension machine and a hamstring curl.

    nothing wrong with plate-loaded machines...

there are some machines i use... but mostly, free weights > machines (stabilizers ftw)

If you want a good 4 day workout, I suggest Noquarters routine at the top of the forum here. Basically, the body can handle a lot more punishment than you may think but you will get great gains too!

The volume kicked my ass for a few weeks but I built up to it and and gains are going better than they have since I first picked up a weight!
