Just bought a new Macbook tonight. Not quite sure what i'm doing... and i will need some guidance over the next few days. So, i figure i'll just keep all my questions in one thread. I've been a PC user for... ever, so take it easy on me, i have no idea what i'm doing.

I've managed to install Firefox and OpenOffice... but i honestly have no idea how. I was having some difficulty with it, but stumbled upon it correctly (or so it seems for now). Can anyone explain how things get 'installed' on a mac?

Even tho i (think) have Firefox installed, it does not show up in the Applications menu (pressing shift+cmd+A, or thru Go>Applications). If i search for Firefox, it comes up, supposedly in the Applications folder, but i cannot actually see it in the normal view. I think i'm missing something somewhere.

So, even if i press the red Close button, an Application is really still running? I have noticed this, i'm just making sure. Is the only way to really close an App to cmd+Q (or File>Close)? Is the Dock the only way of seeing what Apps are open?

Where the hell are the Page Up/Down, Home, and End keys?? This might be the single most annoying thing for me right now, lol.

Is there a PC equivelant to a middle click? I am used to opening new tabs in Firefox with a middle click on the link. It really sucks to control+click, then select Open in New Tab.

Thats all the questions for now... i'm exhausted. To bed I go, thanks in advance Mac Crew.

About the applications, maybe you didn't copy them to the Applications folder?

And yes, applications in Mac OS don't quit when you've closed all their windows unlike in Windows, you need to go to the app and choose quit or cmd-q.

Thanks for all the posts! I'll get to reading. I browsed the OSX Shortcut thread, but it seemed a little beyond me, at this point anyways.

out of curiosity, why didnt you try safari first?

let me give you a couple tips which will save you a lot of headaches.

    1. read your preferences for every program you use, and set it up the way you want. do not complain without knowing everything the program can do because chances are, it can.

    2. do not try to buck the system and do too much self organization. all of the ilife applications (itunes, iphoto, imovie, etc) in particular will both organize and manage your media for you.

    3. see number 1

also: learn all of the keyboard shortcuts that OS X has to offer. it is a very keyboard friendly operating system. + w , q , etc..

Firefox is not as good on Mac as it is on PC. Safari IS the ticket.

I used to use FF and Camino, but Safari clearly beats all of them on speed. I am mainly a PC user (MBP for school) and I do miss my extentions in FF, but if you go here http://pimpmysafari.com/ you can get a lot of the same functionality. Even Ad Block and some tab features (dragging tabs etc).

So... i've come across Quicksilver. I am wondering what the difference between Quicksilver and Spotlight are? Is Spotlight pretty much just a less feature-rich version of what Quicksilver is meant to be?
