I use my home PC mainly for editing photo's... and my wife uses it soley for spreadsheets, and her IPOD.... when trying to run CS2 along with lightroom our PC slows to a crawl. For this type of work, what are some things I can look for to improve speed? Right now, building a new PC soley for my editing is out of the question.... I'm at work right now, but I can get the stats for the PC when I get home.

you didn't really give us much to work with...

Generally, however, it's RAM that is lacking when CS2 slows down.

Get this program. Simple zipped executable. CPU-Z 1.39

Run it, then list all the specs.

Also, find your HDD make/model and video card make/model.

I've been on OT for quite a while, so please take no offense to this....

can anyone else verify that this isn't something that's going to fuck my PC up?

vid card can have a small part in it.

but the memory is huge. 512mb is nothing. upgrade that, stat.

Agreed. You want at least 1GB, if not more (up to about 2GB).

no offense taken. It's a clean freebie tool that'll show us your processor/memory specification in detail. Screenshots work well.

CPU-Z is legit. I use it all the time. Good tool. But not really neccessary since you already know basic specs of your system.

The RAM timings influence their speed. The lower the latency times, the better.

Also, heat can be an issue, especially in overclocked machines. For those applications many buy RAM with heatsinks included and of higher quality.

cpu-z does matter. It'll give us *all* the information we need to make a RAM upgrade recommendation *without* you having to open up the case. Well, that and a mobo make/model depending...

...and your current vid card for the other bit.

also.. assuming I have 1 512 stick, and not 2 256 sticks of RAM, can I just add a 1gb stick to the 512, then buy another 1gb stick later?

I should add that I don't have a lot of extra money to budget PC stuff in...

Get home, give *all the info*:
    1. cpu-z screenies
    2. motherboard make/model (need help? just take a screenie of 'system devices' in 'device manager')
    3. vid card make/model (found in 'device manager' under 'display adapter')

Without all that I can't give good advice. I could tell you something to placate you, if you want.

    afk about 2 hours.

I'll try to get that info tonight. My wife and I are expecting a baby any day now, so we're spending almost every waking hour getting things ready.... :hs:
