I've seen holographic sights mounted with the controls mounted forward and aftward. which is the proper mounting method method or does if depend on the actual unit or does it matter at all?

you might post pics of specifically what sights have been mounted with the controls 'forward' and 'aftward'. Most times we see a red dot that is mounted backwards, it's due to a cop posing for pictures that doesn't usually carry that type of weapon or it's in the movies and their technical advisor is a dumbass.

It certainly matters which way a holographic red dot sight is mounted as the red dot is actually the reflection of a red laser on an internal lens (with the eotech being an exception). If the sight is mounted backwards you won't see the red dot, but your target will.

If that's the case then mine (a cheap one just to see if I like holoscopes) has the controls on the aft of the lens.

I actually don't like it since the recticle moves with my line of vision. This is probably due to it being a cheap model.

I do have a bushnell red dot that doesn't have the movement issues of the holoscope.

I'm just lucky I didn't spend a lot on the one I did purchase.

I know it's not up to the usual standards of WMD, but it's just a trial on a S&W 15-22

The first one you posted is a reflex holographic sight, the second one you posted is a 1x scope. The side-to-side movement is normal although there are usually parallax issues in super cheap models like the one you posted. Usually red dots in that price range are intended to be mounted on airsoft or paintball guns.

Here's a quick video showing an eotech, same principle as the reflex sight you have.

Can't view at work. I'll check it out tonight.

I knew it wouldn't be the one I settled on if I decided on that type, but just wanted to see what I would be dealing with. I don't think I can justify an eotech simply for the price, especially on a 22LR.

I also couldn't use it on something like my FNAR or 700BDL. I'll just chalk it up to a bad purchase and look at some other options.

There are decent red dots in the <$100 range. Here's just one, their optics are actually decent despite the stupid name.

I have the M3 clone as well, with a 5x magnifier. Seems to work just fine.

    :h5:

Same set up, plus the QD mount for the magnifier. When I got my M3 clone, they didn't have any canted mounts in stock, but then when they did have some, Marshall sent me one for free. The service there is some of the best I've ever dealt with.

And it's not an exchange, they just sent out the canted mount and that was that. No shipping charge or anything.

I wish primary arms sold some eotech clones. I was very happy with their Aimpoint clones. For my needs, it worked just fine.
